As the UK marked World Kindness Day on November 13th, the u3a movement highlighted how acts of compassion, empathy, and community spirit can transform lives, especially for those navigating retirement or later years. The global observance, established by the World Kindness Movement, encourages individuals to foster goodwill through everyday gestures, aligning closely with u3a’s ethos of mutual support and shared learning.

A community for lifelong learning

u3a, short for University of the Third Age, welcomes anyone no longer in full-time work, regardless of prior qualifications or age. Launched in the UK in 1982 and inspired by a French model of self-directed education, it has grown into a nationwide network. More than 1,000 local u3as now span towns and cities, uniting over 400,000 members in activities ranging from art classes and philosophy discussions to rambling groups and digital skills workshops.

All activities are member-led, focusing on self-help and low-cost access, with annual fees averaging under £20.

“Kindness is at the heart of what we do,” said Iain Cassidy, CEO of u3a. “Joining u3a isn’t just about learning something new, it’s about belonging. Members support one another, share experiences, and find joy in connection. On World Kindness Day, we celebrate the simple acts of friendship that make such a difference.”

Evidence of impact

The importance of u3a’s philosophy is underscored by growing concerns over social isolation. Recent u3a-commissioned research, including the 2024 Learn to Live report, highlights how non-formal learning can boost confidence, provide structure to post-retirement routines, and cultivate a strong sense of value and enjoyment. The study, which drew on insights from over 800 members, found that participants reported enhanced life satisfaction and credited u3a with creating lasting social networks.

A 2023 study by University of Utrecht students reinforced these findings, examining u3a’s role in alleviating loneliness. Interviews revealed that membership often serves as a lifeline during transitions such as bereavement or relocation. One retiree described emerging from isolation after widowhood thanks to a local book club that evolved into lasting friendships.

The research noted tangible outcomes, including:

  • Reduced feelings of disconnection
  • Improved emotional resilience
  • Better physical health through active engagement

While no programme can eliminate loneliness entirely, u3a consistently acts as a buffer, promoting the UK’s “five ways to well-being”: connecting, being active, taking notice, keeping learning, and giving.

Broader societal benefits

u3a’s impact extends beyond individual members. The Campaign to End Loneliness, a UK coalition, estimates that chronic isolation affects nine million adults, costing the economy £6.3 billion annually in healthcare and lost productivity. By embedding empathy into everyday interactions, u3a helps counter this trend.

World Kindness Day events included virtual kindness challenges and local u3a-led coffee mornings where members shared stories of small gestures, from neighborly check-ins, to volunteering expertise in community gardens.

Bromley u3a exemplifies this spirit. Members recently hosted a World Kindness Day walk combining gentle exercise with conversations on empathy in ageing societies. Such initiatives combat solitude and challenge stereotypes of later life as a period of decline, showing it as a vibrant phase where shared knowledge sparks innovation and mutual aid.

Accessible, inclusive, and rewarding

u3a’s appeal lies in its accessibility. No tutors or exams are required, only curiosity and openness. A 2022 u3a survey found:

  • 78% of members felt more confident after joining
  • 65% reported stronger community ties

These findings align with NHS guidance on social prescribing, which encourages referring people to group activities to support mental health.

Joining u3a: a kindness to yourself and others

World Kindness Day celebrates compassion, empathy, and community spirit, values that reflect u3a’s mission. Joining u3a can help combat loneliness, improve well-being, and keep minds active. Members often report feeling more connected, confident, and fulfilled through participation.

As u3a continues to expand, its message is clear: life-long learning is not only an antidote to isolation but also a kindness to one’s future self, fostering resilience in an increasingly fragmented world.
