Why Women Are Choosing Labiaplasty for More Than Cosmetic Reasons

Labiaplasty, often referred to as “designer vagina” surgery, has gained popularity in the UK as a solution for both aesthetic and functional concerns. A recent investigation by UK cosmetic surgery provider MYA revealed that while aesthetic motivations remain a factor, the majority of patients opt for the procedure due to practical issues like discomfort during exercise, challenges with intimate clothing, and physical distress during sexual activity.

The surgical procedure, performed by experienced MYA surgeons, involves reducing the excess tissue of the labia minora to create a more symmetrical appearance. It can also include a hoodectomy to reduce the size of the clitoral hood. MYA reported that in 2023, patients seeking labiaplasty ranged from 20 to 50 years old, illustrating the wide appeal of the surgery across different life stages.

Functional challenges and improved well-being

Many women turn to labiaplasty due to discomfort stemming from daily activities. Weight fluctuations, including those caused by pregnancy, can affect the skin elasticity in the labia majora, leading to sagging and irritation in tight clothing or during exercise. Physical activities like running, cycling, or spinning can become painful. By addressing these concerns, the surgery not only alleviates discomfort but also improves mobility, health, and overall well-being.

Hygiene is another significant motivator. Excess tissue can make cleaning difficult, trapping bacteria and increasing the risk of infections such as UTIs or yeast infections. Labiaplasty simplifies hygiene routines, promoting better health.

Impact on confidence and self-esteem

Aesthetic concerns remain an important consideration for many women. MYA highlighted how labiaplasty boosts confidence and mental well-being by addressing self-consciousness about the labia’s appearance. For some, the ability to wear leggings, swimsuits, or lace underwear without discomfort represents a newfound freedom.

Dr Domenico Mileto, a cosmetic surgeon, emphasised that patients increasingly seek labiaplasty for functional reasons rather than purely cosmetic ones. “When we ask patients about their reasons for wanting the procedure, there has been a significant increase in the number of women wanting it because the excess skin can cause irritation or pain when exercising or when wearing particular clothing,” he noted.

Amy Scott, head of brand and marketing at MYA, echoed this sentiment: “Labiaplasty has many myths surrounding it and is often referred to as a ‘designer vagina’ surgery. However, it is so much more than that. Most women undergo the procedure for comfort reasons, whether it’s being able to go to a spinning class without pain or feeling comfortable during intimacy.”

A patient’s perspective

Amanda Donnelly, a recent labiaplasty patient, shared her journey, highlighting the life-changing effects of the procedure. Initially apprehensive, Amanda found reassurance through consultations with her MYA surgeon and fellow patients’ stories.

Her motivation stemmed from long-standing insecurities and discomfort, which worsened after childbirth. “The biggest change for me following surgery is just the freedom to wear the clothes I’ve always wanted to wear without feeling uncomfortable or sore,” Amanda said.

She described her recovery as smoother than expected, with minimal pain and visible improvement over time. “I’m now six months post-surgery and couldn’t be happier with the final result,” she added.

The procedure has also improved her mental health, with Amanda noting a boost in confidence and overall well-being. “Before the surgery, I would consciously think about this on a daily basis. Now, I don’t think about it at all,” she said.

Looking ahead

The growing interest in labiaplasty underscores the need for open discussions about its benefits beyond aesthetics. As misconceptions fade, more women are finding relief from physical discomfort, improved hygiene, and enhanced confidence through the procedure.
