New data has revealed that “skincare routine” is being searched on Google more than ever before, as the winter season takes a toll on skin, leaving it dry, dull, and dehydrated. With colder temperatures setting in, beauty expert Trifonia Asmar from Cult Beauty has shared her top tips for keeping skin healthy and radiant throughout the harsh winter months.
Supercharge your moisturiser with oil
Instead of switching to a heavier cream for winter, Asmar suggests enhancing your current moisturiser by adding a few drops of facial oil. This not only locks in moisture but also strengthens the skin’s protective barrier. She recommends oils like rosehip or squalane, which are particularly beneficial for sensitive and dry skin types. “It’s a simple way to elevate your routine without the need for an entirely new product,” says Asmar.
Combat puffiness with skin icing
To reduce morning puffiness and boost circulation, Asmar advises trying “skin icing” – a cold compress or ice roller applied to the skin before any products. This technique helps tighten pores, reduce inflammation, and prime the skin for better absorption of serums and creams. A cold jade roller or an ice facial roller stored in your freezer can be highly effective.
Embrace overnight moisture masks
For deeper hydration, Asmar recommends transforming your regular nighttime moisturiser into an overnight moisture mask. Applying a thicker layer before bed creates a barrier that locks in moisture while you sleep. “This leaves your skin plumper and more hydrated by morning,” she explains. Look for creams containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or shea butter to maximise hydration.
Layer your lip care
With colder weather often leading to chapped lips, Asmar advises adopting a layered lip care routine. “Start with a lip scrub to exfoliate, follow with a nourishing serum or oil, and finish with a hydrating lip mask before bed,” she says. This three-step routine helps keep lips smooth and plump throughout the season.
Incorporate probiotics into your skincare
While probiotics are typically associated with gut health, Asmar suggests adding probiotic-infused products to your skincare routine to balance the skin’s microbiome, reduce redness, and strengthen the skin barrier. “Probiotic serums or moisturisers are perfect for calming irritation and keeping skin resilient in cold weather,” she adds.
Opt for lukewarm showers
It’s easy to indulge in hot showers during the colder months, but Asmar warns that they can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. “Instead, opt for lukewarm showers to help maintain your skin’s moisture balance,” she recommends. She also advises switching to a gentler, hydrating cleanser to keep the skin on your body soft and nourished.
Don’t forget sunscreen
Even in winter, sunscreen is essential. UV rays can still penetrate clouds and cause damage to the skin. Asmar stresses the importance of using a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. “Opt for sunscreens with hydrating ingredients and antioxidants to protect against environmental stressors like pollution and blue light,” she says. To avoid a greasy finish, choose a lightweight formula that offers broad-spectrum protection while keeping your skin comfortable throughout the season.
As winter approaches, these expert tips can help ensure your skin stays nourished, protected, and ready to face the colder months ahead.
