Why Nothing Feels Exciting Anymore (And It’s Not Depression)

The bottom line: Many people are experiencing a feeling of emotional numbness and displeasure driven by chronic overstimulation, stress, and digital dopamine overload. When the brain is constantly stimulated, it adapts by dulling its reward response, which can often be mistaken for symptoms of clinical depression. This state is called anhedonia, and it can be treated with intentional changes to stimulation patterns and nervous system regulation, restoring the brain’s ability to experience pleasure in ordinary life again.




There is a state of mind that can present that is not quite depression, but can feel like the early signs of it. While daily functions like going to work, answering emails, and making dinner feel doable, behind it is an underlying feeling that something feels flat. I’ll start to recognize this when my clients say things like “I just don’t get excited about reading anymore,” or “Things I used to enjoy don’t really hit the same.” It is described as a feeling of dullness or bluntness, and because it is more subtle than classic symptoms of depression, it can be harder to recognise. 

Clinically, this experience of emotions is called anhedonia. Anhedonia refers to the reduced ability to feel pleasure. While it is often associated with depression and can be a precursor to depression, not all anhedonia is clinical depression. Increasingly, I’ve started observing and hypothesising that this particular type of anhedonia is linked to an overstimulated nervous system, shut down from receiving constant excess input from various sources. 

When overstimulation becomes the norm

The human brain is wired for reward, and dopamine plays a central role in helping us anticipate and pursue experiences that trigger those feelings of reward. Typical experiences that enact this mechanism are things like feeling satisfaction after a tasty meal, achieving milestones towards a fitness goal, or the joy of finishing a book. Our dopamine response is designed for healthy and balanced occurrences of these kinds of experiences. In today’s world, particularly one where digital interactions may be more frequent than in-person ones, we interact in a way that causes constant exposure to dopamine, and our brain function is not set up to cope with this excess. 

Human interactions have become consumed with social media notifications, streaming platforms that auto-play, doomscrolling, persistent breaking news cycles, online shopping, gaming, and short-form video content like we see on TikTok or Instagram. These interactions are designed to capture one’s attention and sustain it only for seconds or minutes, enabling our dopamine response at a rate that is significantly higher than what our brain was originally developed for. With any physiological or environmental adjustment across human evolution, the brain adapts, and in the case of excess dopamine consumption, experiences that once felt novel or exciting now feel normal or dulling. The ones that felt normal in a pre-digital age, like finding a perfectly ripe apple in the grocery store, can now feel markedly understimulating.  

The result of this adapted brain response to excess dopamine response can cause anhedonia, and as a therapist, I’ve seen an increase in people reporting feeling desensitised, empty, and overstimulated pretty persistently. Many are now asking how they can remedy this back to a previous state.  

From reward to anti-reward

Chronic overstimulation has shown to be directly correlated to increased levels of stress in the nervous system. Research on dopamine and stress regulation shows that prolonged activation of these reward circuits can eventually shift the brain into what some researchers call an “anti-reward state”, where instead of reacting to pleasure, the nervous system becomes more reactive to discomfort. This can cause a spike in cortisol levels, disruptions in sleep patterns, and heightened feelings of impatience, irritability, and general angst. 

Some report that things that used to feel soothing prior to digital consumption may start to feel draining, and what used to feel motivating may feel exhausting. This is particularly true for activities that take sustained and longer focus, like exercise and reading, because the brain is no longer wired to experience a buildup to dopamine reward and now expects one that is instant. Screen addiction can be a consequence of this, because the desire for instant stimulation and dopamine reward can be immediately addressed with a quick scroll through your feed.   

When we layer constant stimulation in with general daily exposure to stress, the brain’s ability to enact resilience, soothing mechanisms, and restorative hormonal response dysfunctions.

Emotional numbness is a nervous system response

The past several years have been categorized by a collective experience of prolonged exposure to stress due to experiences of COVID-19 pandemic isolation, ongoing economic uncertainty, and increasing political tension. These experiences of stress are even more unique in the modern era because they have all been recorded, documented, and instantly shareable on social media. Not only are we personally going through these stressors, but we are vicariously experiencing the stress of everyone else that we witness online. As a therapist, I have concerns that our collective nervous systems have not many, if any, opportunities to recover, restore, and recalibrate.

Under prolonged stress, the body adapts by conserving energy by disengaging regular function, and engaging cortisol and adrenaline to release hormones that fight off what the brain perceives to be threats. That energy conservation can present as a flat affect, reduced desire to seek out social interaction, feelings of low mood or motivation, and emotional distancing. While not quite meeting the diagnostic criteria for depression, these experiences of anhedonia can be overlooked or ignored. 

When someone I work with starts to express feelings, I work with them to understand what their stimulation patterns are, how they sleep, how they manage stress, and how connected they feel to their environment. It helps us to identify points in their daily life where we can introduce habits that counter this mental state. 

How the brain relearns its experience of pleasure

If you’ve gotten to this point in the article and are feeling worried that you might have permanently altered your brain’s system, fret not. It can be recalibrated – most effectively done by slowly reducing how much stimulus it receives, and slowly introducing tempered, more regulated habits that are soothing and restorative. 

The first and easiest thing is to look at where you can reduce high-dopamine activities in your life. The ones I hear the most about are social media use and news consumption. You can consider installing app-blockers on your phone that prevent prolonged scrolling, scheduling device-free hours in your schedule, and being thoughtful and boundaried being informed just enough about what is going on in the news.  

Many of my clients report not being able to go very long without checking their device, indicating a need to tackle these habits as we would with any other type of addiction: focus on harm reduction and taking small-micro steps at the beginning to slowly reduce your consumption and triggers for consumption over time. Complete and immediate abstention is not recommended, so your brain has ample time and space to adjust at a healthy pace in order to reset its sensitivity to dopamine reward. 

Sleep restoration and hygiene are also key parts of this process, as sleep is when our brain recovers. Dopamine regulation, along with any other hormonal response we have, is linked to our circadian rhythms. This means that when sleep is disrupted, reward processing dysfunctions. Prioritising consistent sleep habits, which include abstaining from screen time for at least an hour before bed, can start to show benefits pretty quickly.

I also encourage my clients to create what I like to call a “dopamine menu”, which is a personalised collection of easy, low-intensity activities that engage the senses. This could look like:

  • Taking a 10-minute walk
  • Listening to music without multitasking
  • Reading 5–10 pages of a book
  • Cooking something intentionally
  • Sitting outside without a phone
  • Calling a friend and being fully present

It may take some time for these activities to start to feel enjoyable, and it’s normal if initially they actually feel the opposite of that. It is part of the recalibration process. It’s important to remember that the brain needs repetition of moderate stimulation to relearn that simple experiences are enough dopamine for it to be at its optimal health.

When to seek help

There are moments when symptoms of anhedonia signal something more significant. If numbness is accompanied by persistent low mood, hopelessness, appetite changes, significant sleep disruption, or thoughts of self-harm, seek the help of a licensed mental health professional.

Because this particular type of emotional numbness is linked to over-saturation and over-stimulation, asking yourself the following questions can help you assess how changing your habits may help you: 

  • How much input am I consuming each day?
  • When was the last time I experienced boredom without reaching for a screen?
  • How often do I allow my nervous system to settle without using social media?
  • How many times did I go down various rabbit holes on the internet today? 

Leading with curiosity about your habits can help quell feelings of shame and self-criticism. 

Recalibration takes patience

The nervous system is not designed for perpetual stimulation. The feeling of pleasure becomes most sustainably accessible when it is spaced out, timed, and a novelty. If you can start to incorporate some of the suggestions cited above, you may find that your feelings of motivation to do things you used to enjoy return because your brain will have the capacity to anticipate reward again. If nothing feels exciting right now, know that you are not alone in that experience. Take it as a signal that your brain needs less, not more.

Reducing intensity of dopamine consumption will require patience and may feel uncomfortable at first. As you fight the urge to reach for your favorite social media app, over time, sensitivity will come back, and your experience of subtle pleasures will become noticeable again.
