Crystals are beautiful, and mystical, and are sure to catch your attention. In alternative medicine, they’re one of the most popular trends. These rocks are semi-rare and beautiful, and some have bright and rare colours.
Many believe holding crystals or positioning them in various body areas can bring numerous mental and physical health benefits. How much truth is there to that, and what does science say about it?
To answer that question, looking at the lore and history of crystals is necessary.
How crystals were used historically
Jude Polack, the founder and director of bewater, a company that sells crystal-infused water, has some thoughts on how people have always used crystals for well-being.
She says records from Ancient Sumer prove that people used crystals for health and prosperity. In the UK, more than 10,000 years ago, humans relied on amber to improve well-being and enhance protection.
In Egypt, crystals were very popular as well, Polack says. Even Da Vinci reportedly kept a stone on his desk because he believed that it dispelled evil spirits.
Crystals have been present throughout human history. Nonetheless, to determine if they’re beneficial to people’s physical and mental health today, it’s crucial to see what the scientific community has to say.
What science says about crystal healing
Unfortunately, there are not many studies that support crystal science. However, in 1880, brothers Jack and Pierre Curie found that putting pressure on crystals and changing their temperature created electricity.
Even though researchers have not conducted many studies after that, a large community believes that crystals have the power to change the body’s energy levels.
In the late 90s, scientists conducted another study. Its results showed that the placebo effect influenced whether or not the participants felt changes when they used crystals.
However, professionals like Polack defend the power of crystals saying they’re supposed to work like that. A crucial part of it depends on the person’s mind.
In crystal therapy, the physical characteristics of the stones could affect the way it helps the person. Even so, there is no specific scientific manual to show you what crystal you should use for different purposes.
Instead, the community believes the person themselves can affect the outcomes. In other words, the power of your mind, how you feel when you’re putting crystals on your body, and similar factors could change what happens.
Crystals and mental health
Nowadays, many people are using crystals to feel better, particularly if they suffer from mental health disorders.
Although there are no scientific papers to support crystals’ effect on the mind, they can help in some ways. Many people have reported that they’ve experienced the benefits of using these stones and if they got the chance, you can too.
Suppose you suffer from anxiety. In that case, you should try to have a crystal with you at all times. It can help you feel grounded, especially when your heart starts beating fast, or whenever you experience other unpleasant symptoms.
Crystals can also provide a way to feel connected to the world. Being part of such a large community of believers is fantastic too, especially if you’re lonely.
Many people enjoy collecting crystals because it gives them a sense of purpose. Having them at home (or wearing them!) allows you to spiritually connect with something greater than yourself. Plus, you’ll get to be part of a community that believes the same thing as you.
Takeaway
Crystals can provide support if you’re going through a rough patch, suffering from a mental health disorder, or feeling very stressed.
The scientific community itself has not published many articles on it. However, there are numerous anecdotes of people who’ve felt better and more grounded when they’ve collected crystals.
Although there are many non-believers out there, the truth is that human beings have relied on crystals and other forms of alternative medicine for thousands of years.
You don’t have to follow any specific rules when you start your crystal journey. Some choose to learn about the different types, while others prefer engaging with the community and learning from more experienced people.
Overall, remember that your mind is immensely powerful. Crystals can make you feel grounded, more relaxed, and even happier if you manage your thoughts and do everything to spiritually connect to the practice.
