Wellness Expert Shares the Benefits of Walking in The British Outdoors

Now that brighter days and warmer weather have arrived, many Brits will enjoy walking outside and exploring the great British countryside. Whether you live near idyllic locations to go for a country walk or plan on making trips out, there are lots of benefits to embracing the British outdoors. 

Countryside clothing brand Fairfax & Favor recently spoke with a wellness and fitness expert about the mental health and physical benefits that can be gained by walking outdoors. They spoke with Andrew White, a NASM-certified personal trainer.

  • Walking outdoors isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. It’s a fantastic cardiovascular exercise that’s accessible to all fitness levels. The mental health benefits of outdoor walks cannot be overstated. There’s something incredibly calming about being surrounded by nature, and it is known to decrease stress, anxiety and depression. Andrew shared: “Whenever I feel overwhelmed, a walk outdoors never fails to lift my spirits and clear my mind. The natural light also boosts mood by increasing vitamin D levels, which is essential for overall well-being. Plus, the rhythmic motion of walking is like meditation in motion, allowing me to tap into my creativity and improve focus and concentration.”
  • Incorporating outdoor walks into your routine is simple, but there are ways to maximise the benefits. Andrew said: “Personally, I like to vary my routes to keep things interesting and challenging. I also make it a point to incorporate different terrains to work different muscle groups and prevent boredom. Using a fitness tracker can be incredibly motivating, as it allows us to set and track goals, keeping me accountable and motivated. And remember, consistency is key, so aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week to reap the full rewards.”

From improving physical health to boosting mental well-being and fostering social connections, the benefits are vast and varied. In addition to Andrew’s advice, there are further benefits to be gained from walking outdoors.  In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, finding moments of peace and tranquillity can be challenging.
