As the UK braces for an imminent cold snap, with temperatures forecasted to plummet and snow anticipated in various regions, concerns are mounting over the escalating cost of heating homes. The energy price cap, regulated by Ofgem, increased by 1.2% on 1 January 2025, raising the average annual household energy bill to £1,738.
In response to these challenges, the Warm Welcome Campaign has expanded its network to over 5,000 Warm Welcome Spaces across the UK. These venues, including community centres, libraries, art centres, places of worship, museums, and sports facilities, offer refuge to individuals struggling to keep warm during the harsh winter months. By entering their postcode into an interactive map, residents can easily locate their nearest Warm Welcome Space.
David Barclay, campaign director for Warm Welcome, emphasised the critical role these spaces play: “With freezing temperatures in the forecast, we know that too many people will be faced with the stark choice between heating and eating. Warm Welcome Spaces offer vital support to vulnerable communities, and we want to get the message out that there is help available to anyone who needs it. These community spaces not only provide physical warmth, a cuppa and a hot meal, they are also places of connection and belonging, fuelled by human warmth.”
The impact of Warm Welcome Spaces is significant. On average, 120,000 guests visit these venues each week. Over the past two years, 50% of guests reported that without access to a Warm Welcome Space, they would have remained at home with the heating turned off, highlighting the essential service these spaces provide in preventing cold-related health issues and social isolation.
The recent increase in the energy price cap compounds the financial strain on households. Although the rise from £1,717 to £1,738 per year may appear modest, it adds to the cumulative burden of energy costs that have been escalating over the past year. This situation is exacerbated by the discontinuation of certain government support measures, such as the winter fuel allowance for many pensioners, intensifying the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.
In this context, Warm Welcome Spaces serve not only as places to stay warm but also as hubs for community engagement and support. Many of these spaces offer additional services, including free hot drinks, meals, entertainment, cultural activities, and advice sessions on topics like household budgeting. This holistic approach aims to address both the physical and emotional well-being of individuals during the winter months.
Barclay further stated: “With rising energy prices and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, people are struggling to make ends meet. We don’t want anyone to feel cold or lonely this winter, which is why we are working hard to raise awareness and send a message that there’s a Warm Welcome Space waiting for you in your neighbourhood.”
The Warm Welcome Campaign’s vision extends beyond the winter months. By fostering a network of inclusive community spaces, the campaign seeks to build a more connected society where everyone has access to welcoming environments year-round. This initiative not only addresses immediate needs but also contributes to long-term community resilience and cohesion.
