As the clocks go back this weekend, over 5,500 Warm Welcome Spaces across the UK are opening their doors to support communities facing fuel poverty, loneliness, and the rising cost of living. These spaces, which include libraries, community centres, churches, cafes, and museums, provide warmth, companionship, and practical help to those struggling to heat their homes or afford essentials.

The Warm Welcome Campaign, which connects and resources these hubs, reports a sharp increase in demand. Last year, the initiative supported more than 2.6 million people, with most venues open year-round but busiest in winter. The number of spaces has grown by nearly 40% in the past year, reflecting the impact of the cost-of-living crisis.

Polling by OVO, a campaign partner, underscores the urgency of the issue. It found that 91% of Britons are worried about their energy bills this winter, while 71% are more concerned than last year. Despite the widespread availability of support, awareness remains low. Research shows that 68% of people in the UK live within 30 minutes of a Warm Welcome Space, yet only 23% know of one nearby.

David Barclay, Warm Welcome Campaign Director, said: “Warm Welcome Spaces are a lifeline to communities, and we want everyone to know how they can find their local space. With high energy prices and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, people are struggling to make ends meet. Too many people have to make the impossible choice between heating and eating.”

He added: “We know demand will be high this winter, not only supporting people struggling to pay the bills but also connecting communities and giving people a place of belonging. The dark winter days and nights can be extremely tough on anyone living alone.”
