Nina Barough CBE, the dynamic founder and chief executive of the cancer charity Walk the Walk, is gearing up for her 26th consecutive New York City Marathon this year. She extends an open invitation to individuals eager to join her and the charity’s team in this iconic event, scheduled for 2nd November 2025.

The relationship between Walk the Walk and the New York City Marathon is both historic and deeply personal. In 1996, Barough, inspired by a vivid dream, rallied 13 friends to power walk the marathon adorned in decorated bras. This bold endeavour raised £25,000 for breast cancer research, marking the inception of what would become a globally recognised charity. Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Barough shared, “What started out as a one-off fundraising event has blossomed into a thriving multi-million-pound charity.”

Following the success in New York, Barough faced a personal battle when she was diagnosed with breast cancer just two months later. Demonstrating resilience, she continued to power walk throughout her treatment. This determination led to the creation of The MoonWalk in 1998, an overnight fundraising event where participants don decorated bras and walk through the night. The inaugural event saw 65 walkers embark on a midnight marathon, laying the foundation for Walk the Walk’s flagship fundraiser.

The New York City Marathon, renowned as one of the six World Marathon Majors, offers participants an unparalleled experience. The course weaves through the city’s five boroughs, with enthusiastic spectators lining the streets, creating an electrifying atmosphere. Barough emphasised, “New York is famed for the incredible support from crowds lining the route and is the biggest marathon in the world.”

Walk the Walk’s New York package is meticulously crafted to ensure a memorable experience. Participants will enjoy:

  • Pre-marathon pasta party. An intimate gathering the night before the race, fostering camaraderie among team members.
  • Post-marathon celebratory breakfast. Held at the iconic Ellen’s Stardust Diner, participants can revel in their achievements.
  • Comprehensive support. From fundraising assistance and training advice to on-course support from Walk the Walk staff, every detail is addressed to ensure participants feel prepared and supported.

Entries are now open for those wishing to join Barough and the Walk the Walk team in the 2025 New York City Marathon. Given the limited availability, prospective participants are encouraged to register promptly. The tour spans from Thursday, 30th October to Monday, 3rd November 2025, with packages starting from £2,399. This includes a 4-star hotel stay, race entry, and additional perks such as entry to the “Dash to the Finish Line” 5K race on Saturday morning. A minimum fundraising commitment of £750 is required, directly supporting Walk the Walk’s ongoing efforts in cancer prevention, research, and patient support.

Barough’s unwavering dedication over nearly three decades has not only raised significant funds but also heightened awareness for breast cancer. Her journey from a singular dream to leading thousands in the fight against cancer exemplifies the profound impact of individual initiative and collective action.
