Position overview

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for a Lectureship in Psychology to support the School of Psychology’s goal of strengthening our research and teaching programme in critical health psychology. Candidates should have an interest in, and demonstrated expertise for, teaching, supervision and research in critical health psychology. The successful applicant will have interests in applied health psychology, a commitment to developing a research programme that complements and extends existing work in the School, and the potential to attract external funding. The successful candidate should be able to dialogue effectively across a variety of perspectives related to health, but have expertise in critical approaches.

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in psychology or a related health discipline, with some experience in tertiary teaching and an active research programme. The appointee will be expected to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to supervise health psychology practicums, and research theses at doctoral and master’s level.

Collaborative teaching and research, involving colleagues working for School of Psychology programmes across our campuses, will be a priority. Staff may be required by the Head of School to teach for short periods on any campus of the University. As part of Massey University’s commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi, the School of Psychology incorporates a bicultural focus into its programmes. The position is located in Auckland (Albany Campus), however this could be negotiated.

The School offers degree programmes to doctoral level in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Science and in the College of Health. At undergraduate level, majors in Psychology, Business Psychology and Educational Psychology are available.

This position will be available from January 2019. Appointment will be on the Lecturer scale at a level comparative to qualifications and experience.

Job description

Purpose statement: To provide teaching and research supervision and academic scholarship that will further strengthen the programmes in the School of Psychology.

Responsible to: Head of School

Key accountabilities

1. Teaching

  • Undertake the teaching and paper coordination of undergraduate and postgraduate papers you are requested to contribute to, with an emphasis in the area of health psychology
  • Undertake the teaching of courses intended for distance education students, on all campuses as required. You may be required to teach on a campus other than the one where you are situated.
  • Ongoing development of the structure and content of the paper(s) for which you are the Paper Coordinator in collaboration with colleagues who also teach in these areas
  • Supervising and assessing student work
  • ‘Guest lecturing’ for other staff within the School
  • Supervise honours, master’s and doctoral students
  • Contribute to the development of a supportive atmosphere for Psychology students on the designated campus, and develop strategies for retention and achievement of Psychology majors from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Undertake professional development activities consistent with teaching and supervision
  • Participate in the University’s formal procedures of evaluating teaching and course delivery

2. Research

  • Initiate and undertake an original programme of research in your own area of expertise, so as to contribute to the School’s scholarly outputs in quality-assured publications
  • Disseminate knowledge through scholarly research activities and publications; it would be expected that at least two articles per year would be published in refereed journals, for which you are the sole or co-author
  • Apply for external research funding to appropriate bodies
  • Participate in conferences to advance research interests
  • Engage fully in the supervision of postgraduate students’ research at the honours, master’s and doctoral level
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues on research projects
  • Undertake professional development activities to support successful research outcomes

3. Administration

  • Undertake administration of courses to which you are requested to contribute.
  • Play a collegial role within the School and the University by serving on committees and taking on administrative tasks of a general nature for the School as would typically be expected of a Lecturer
  • Undertake professional development activities consistent with administration as directed by the Head of School

4. Cooperate within the School and share School objectives to advance the knowledge and practice of Psychology

5. Adhere to the rules and regulations of the University.

6. Comply with the University’s obligation under its Charter regarding equal employment and the Treaty of Waitangi

Person specification

Qualifications: PhD in Psychology or related health discipline.

Experience

  • Some teaching experience in a tertiary setting
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a record of research and publication with critical health psychology emphasis
  • Experience as a team member in externally-funded research projects is desirable.
