Reading Time: 2 minutes

The University of Chester’s psychology team has released a timely new episode of its podcast series The Psychology Of…, focusing on mental health. Coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Week, which runs from 12th–18th May 2025, the episode titled The Psychology Of… Mental Health explores essential aspects of psychological well-being.

Hosted by senior lecturer Dr Clea Wright, the 30-minute episode features fellow lecturers Dr Michelle Tytherleigh and Dr Kevin Hochard, who offer expert perspectives on mental health challenges and coping strategies. Topics discussed include recognising positive and negative behaviours, identifying when professional help may be necessary, and the role of gratitude in promoting well-being.

Dr Tytherleigh, a specialist in positive psychology, shares insight into building resilience through positive practices. Dr Hochard clarifies the difference between temporary low mood and clinical depression, helping listeners understand when to seek support.

Reflecting on the episode, Dr Wright said: “Following the great response we had to The Psychology Of… The Traitors podcast series, we’ve continued to discuss topics that offer listeners a psychological viewpoint. With this being Mental Health Awareness Week, it felt appropriate to focus on such an important topic and provide some general tips on psychological well-being. Thanks to our guests Michelle and Kevin for a great discussion, and we aim to offer more thought-provoking episodes in the coming months.”

The series has gained a following for its accessible approach to psychological topics. A previous instalment, The Psychology Of… The Traitors, featured Dr Wright, Dr Hochard, and Professor Lisa Oakley analysing the behaviours of contestants in the BBC reality show The Traitors. Their discussions covered themes such as trust, deception, and group dynamics, resonating strongly with audiences and establishing the team as reliable voices in applied psychology.

This latest episode builds on that success and supports the aims of Mental Health Awareness Week, which this year encourages open conversations and aims to reduce stigma. The campaign, led by the Mental Health Foundation, reaches millions annually through events and resources that promote understanding and support.

By contributing to these efforts, the University of Chester offers an academic yet relatable resource that breaks down complex psychological ideas for a wide audience. The podcast is both informative and practical, offering general advice for maintaining mental well-being while emphasising when to seek professional help.

Listeners can access The Psychology Of… Mental Health on Spotify. The university’s psychology department plans to continue the series, with future episodes set to explore a range of topics in psychology.

The podcast’s release comes at a time when mental health awareness is increasingly prioritised in the UK. NHS data indicates that one in four adults experiences a mental health issue each year, highlighting the ongoing need for resources that support mental well-being. Through their expert-led yet conversational approach, the University of Chester team is helping to make psychology more accessible and relevant to everyday life.

For those interested in the crossover between psychology and popular culture, The Psychology Of… The Traitors series also remains available on Spotify, providing an engaging complement to the new mental health episode.
