Application for travel grants/scholarships are now open for the Abortion and Reproductive Justice: The Unfinished Revolution Conference

Applications are open for three kinds of travel grants/scholarships: (1) Department of Social Development; (2) Open Society Foundation; and (3) Social and Legal Studies.

Grants cover the costs of conference registration fees, accommodation for the duration of the conference, and travel expenses for potential candidates who meet the criteria listed below.

Department of Social Development Grants Criteria

The grants will be awarded to two people per province in South Africa, and may cover up to 20 delegates in sub Saharan Africa, who meet the following criteria:

  • Under the age of 35;
  • From South Africa or Southern African Development Community (SADC) country;
  • A Student, NGO Representative, Civil Society Affiliate, Health Service Provider, or Health Policy Practitioner;
  • Affiliated with an organisation (university, NGO, CBO, or government department);
  • Show that the affiliated organisation is not be able to cover the full conference expenses.

Open Society Foundation Grants Criteria

  • From any country globally;
  • Student, Researcher or Academic with limited institutional funding, NGO Representative, Civil Society
  • Affiliate, Health Service Provider, or Health Policy Practitioner;
  • Affiliated with an organisation (university, NGO, CBO, or government department);
  • Show that the affiliated organisation is not be able to cover the full conference expenses.

Social and Legal Studies Grants Criteria

  • Student or early career researcher/academic;
  • Preference will be given to candidates from the global South;
  • Show that the affiliated organisation is not be able to cover the full conference expenses.

If selected, applicants are required to:

  • Attend the entire conference (including workshops on the Sunday).
  • Preference will be given to those who are presenting a paper in the abstract-driven section of the conference.
  • Write a report or blog after the conference on: why they wanted to attend the conference; their experiences of the conference; how they plan to implement the lessons learned; and the networks that they established.
