TikTok’s Sleepmaxxing Trend Raises Concerns Among Experts

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Over the past few months, TikTok has been flooded with videos showcasing the latest trend in sleep optimisation, dubbed “sleepmaxxing”. From mouth-taping techniques to digital sleep trackers and rigid schedules, users are going to great lengths to achieve the perfect night’s rest. But experts are cautioning that this obsessive focus on sleep metrics may be counterproductive, leading to increased stress and poor sleep quality.

The trend, which has garnered millions of views, reflects a growing public interest in better sleep. Google search data indicates a 67% surge in queries for “ways to improve sleep quality” over the last three months, underlining the desire for effective solutions. But while the pursuit of better rest is commendable, experts warn against letting data and external aids dominate the sleep experience.

The downside of sleep metrics

Many individuals in the sleepmaxxing community rely heavily on devices like wearable sleep trackers to monitor their rest. These gadgets, while useful for gathering data, can inadvertently foster anxiety about hitting optimal sleep targets. This phenomenon, sometimes referred to as orthosomnia, occurs when an obsession with achieving “perfect” sleep disrupts natural sleeping patterns.

“While sleep trackers can provide insights, overanalysing the data can lead to stress, which ironically makes it harder to sleep,” explains Dr Emily Ward, a sleep consultant. “It’s essential to remember that sleep is a natural process, not a performance to perfect.”

Simple bedroom changes for better sleep

For those seeking practical ways to enhance sleep without the pitfalls of obsessive monitoring, Josie Towells, soft furnishings senior buyer at DUSK, suggests focusing on creating a bedroom environment conducive to rest. Here are five effective changes she recommends:

  • Invest in a high-quality mattress. A supportive mattress is vital for good sleep. Poor-quality mattresses can cause discomfort, leading to restless nights. Memory foam mattresses, which adapt to your body shape, are a popular option. For those on a budget, a high-quality mattress topper can revitalise an older bed without the expense of a full replacement.
  • Alter light levels naturally. Mimicking natural light patterns can help regulate the body’s circadian rhythm. Using a dimmer lamp at night and gradually increasing light intensity in the morning can create a soothing transition between wakefulness and sleep.
  • Maintain a good sleep position. Proper sleep posture, supported by quality pillows, prevents aches and pains. Testing a pillow’s effectiveness is simple: fold it in half. If it springs back quickly, it provides sufficient support; if not, it’s time for a replacement.
  • Keep a comfortable temperature. Temperature plays a crucial role in restfulness. Adjusting bedding seasonally and maintaining a room temperature between 15°C and 20°C can minimise disruptions.
  • Choose high-thread-count bedding. Bedding with a 400-thread count offers a luxurious feel while promoting airflow, which helps regulate body temperature. This balance of comfort and practicality enhances sleep quality.

Sleepmaxxing or overthinking?

The sleepmaxxing trend underscores a genuine desire for better rest in an increasingly stressful world. However, experts urge individuals to strike a balance between using tools and maintaining a relaxed approach to sleep. Simple adjustments to the sleeping environment can offer significant benefits without the added pressure of achieving perfection.
