A new study by Adobe Express has revealed the UK’s best cities for employees, with Swindon emerging as the top contender, closely followed by Milton Keynes and Stoke-on-Trent.
As of September 2024, 13% of British workers were working exclusively from home, while 23% embraced a hybrid model. The benefits of working from home, such as the absence of a commute and lower costs, are often highlighted by employees. However, what if the city you live in already caters to your professional needs? Adobe Express has delved into the key aspects of working life to determine which cities stand out for employees across the UK.
To compile its list, Adobe Express evaluated 30 UK cities based on factors including average annual salary, the cost of public transport, access to green space, and even the price of a cappuccino.
Swindon leads the pack with a total score of 6.541, driven by its strong employment rate and low unemployment. As of the year ending December 2023, Swindon’s employment rate outpaced the broader South West region. With major employers such as BMW, the Ministry of Defence, and Nationwide Building Society based in the area, Swindon boasts a dynamic job market. The city also ranks seventh in the UK for productivity per worker, further cementing its position as a top city for employees.
In second place, Milton Keynes is praised for its high average annual salary of £39,623. The city also benefits from its private sector, which fosters diverse job opportunities. According to the local council, Milton Keynes has one of the highest rates of private sector employment in the UK. The competition between businesses creates a fertile ground for career development, with employers offering attractive packages to lure talent.
Stoke-on-Trent rounds out the top three, particularly excelling in its abundance of green spaces. Known as “The Potteries,” Stoke has a deep-rooted history in the ceramics industry, which remains an economic staple. For those drawn to arts and culture, the city offers a wealth of museums and galleries celebrating its industrial heritage. Additionally, its central location and excellent transport links make Stoke an ideal base for professionals commuting to other major cities, such as Birmingham, Manchester, and London.
