A recent study has revealed promising results for a three-month fitness and nutrition programme designed to improve the physical and mental health of military veterans. The programme, known as Warrior Health and Fitness (WHF), has been found to be both feasible and effective, although participant retention remains a significant challenge. The findings were published in the journal Military Medicine.
The study, conducted between 2019 and 2023, involved 517 veterans across two cohorts, who participated in a range of activities aimed at boosting their overall well-being. These activities included supervised group fitness sessions, one-on-one training, nutritional consultations, and wellness practices such as yoga and resilience education.
The findings from the WHF programme were largely positive. Participants demonstrated significant improvements in several key physical health metrics. In the first cohort, notable advancements were observed in weight reduction, left-hand grip strength, and body fat percentage. The second cohort also showed similar improvements, with additional gains in right-hand grip strength and a reduction in waist-to-hip ratios. These outcomes suggest that the programme effectively enhances physical strength and overall fitness among veterans.
While improvements in body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure were less consistent, the study’s authors highlighted the general trend towards better health as an encouraging sign. These physical health benefits are particularly important for veterans, who often struggle to maintain the high fitness levels required during their military service after transitioning to civilian life.
The WHF programme also aimed to address the mental health challenges faced by veterans. Improvements in quality of life were reported across both cohorts, with many participants expressing satisfaction with the programme and its impact on their overall well-being. However, the study also uncovered an unexpected increase in pain intensity and interference among participants.
This rise in pain could be attributed to muscle soreness or other physical discomforts resulting from the increased physical activity. The study’s authors speculated that this pain might be temporary, linked to the natural process of muscle adaptation and recovery. Nevertheless, the increase in reported pain highlights the need for careful management of physical exertion levels and more robust support for participants experiencing discomfort.
Despite the positive outcomes, the study noted significant challenges in retaining participants throughout the programme. High dropout rates were reported in both cohorts, with 63.8% of participants in the first cohort and 39.5% in the second cohort not completing the full three-month programme. The COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted in-person activities for over a year, exacerbated these retention issues.
The authors suggested that the high attrition rate might be a result of some participants’ increased pain or other personal difficulties. They recommended future iterations of the programme include measures to enhance retention, such as online physical assessments, rewards for completion, and stronger group cohesion activities.
