Study Reveals Vlogs Significantly Improve English Speaking Skills in High School Students

The traditional classroom setting has often struggled to keep pace with the dynamic needs of students, particularly in developing practical speaking skills in English. A recent study published in the SELL Journal offers a new insight into the potential of integrating modern technology into language learning.

The researchers, Mahrus and Mariyatul Kiptiyah, embarked on an exploratory journey to understand the impact of vlogs on enhancing English-speaking skills among junior high school students. Their findings illuminate a path forward in language education, challenging conventional methods and embracing the digital era’s tools.

The study was motivated by a recurring challenge faced in English language education: the development of speaking skills. Many students, despite years of English language education, find themselves struggling to communicate effectively. The study aimed to explore whether vlogs, a prevalent form of digital media, could bridge this gap.

Mahrus and Kiptiyah conducted a pre-experimental study involving junior high school students. The research design was meticulous, involving a pre-test to assess students’ initial speaking abilities, followed by the introduction of vlogs as a learning tool. The students were encouraged to engage with vlogs in a manner that emphasised not just passive consumption but active participation and creation.

The study’s results were compelling. There was a significant improvement in the students’ speaking skills, as evidenced by higher post-test scores. This improvement was not just in fluency but also in aspects like grammar and pronunciation. The use of vlogs provided a platform for students to practice speaking in a more natural and less intimidating environment than the traditional classroom.

This study highlights the potential of vlogs as an effective tool for language education. Vlogs offer several advantages: they are accessible, engage students in a medium they are familiar with and comfortable using, and provide opportunities for practical application of language skills. Additionally, vlogs allow for a more personalised learning experience, where students can learn at their own pace and in a style that suits them.

While the study presents a promising outlook, it also acknowledges certain limitations. The sample size was relatively small, and the study was conducted in a specific educational context, which may limit the generalisability of the findings. Furthermore, the reliance on technology means that access to adequate digital devices and internet connectivity becomes crucial.

The success of this study opens up several avenues for future research. There is a need to explore the implementation of vlogs in different educational contexts and with varied student demographics. Additionally, long-term studies could provide deeper insights into the sustainability and long-term effectiveness of vlogs as a learning tool.
