Study Reveals Evolutionary Impact of Website Design on User Perception

The colour and shape of website elements have a significant impact on user perception and behaviour, according to a recent study by researchers from universities in Germany and Austria. The study, grounded in evolutionary psychology, utilised neuroimaging techniques to understand how different website designs influence users on a subconscious level. The findings, published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, indicate that design elements such as colour and button shape not only affect users’ immediate responses but are also deeply rooted in ancient evolutionary mechanisms.

Website design has long been recognised as a critical factor in user engagement and satisfaction. Previous research has focused extensively on how visual stimuli, such as colour and shape, affect user behaviour. But this study takes a novel approach by examining these effects through the lens of evolutionary psychology and using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure neural responses.

The researchers aimed to explore how colour and button shape on e-commerce websites influence user perceptions, including pleasure, arousal, trust, and overall attitude towards the site. They hypothesised that these design elements evoke responses that have been ingrained in humans over millions of years, dating back to when early humans relied on colour and shape cues for survival.

The study’s results indicate that colour plays a crucial role in shaping user experiences on websites. Participants reported feeling more pleasure and less distrust when interacting with websites that featured colour, particularly blue. This preference for blue aligns with its association with open spaces, clear skies, and water, which are traditionally linked to safety and calmness. In contrast, red, often associated with danger and threat, was less favourably received, although it still outperformed websites that lacked colour altogether.

Neuroimaging data supported these findings, showing that coloured websites, especially those with blue hues, required less cognitive effort to process compared to their uncoloured counterparts. The study found a significant deactivation in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) when participants viewed coloured websites versus uncoloured ones. This deactivation suggests that coloured websites, particularly blue, are perceived as less mentally taxing, allowing users to interact with them more comfortably.

The study also discovered that red websites activated the left dlPFC more, which means they needed more mental energy. This is probably because red has evolved to be associated with danger and alertness. This finding underscores the importance of colour in website design, particularly in contexts where user trust and comfort are paramount, influencing decisions made by expert providers of web design in Chicago.

In addition to colour, the shape of buttons on websites also influenced user perceptions. The study revealed that rounded buttons were generally preferred over sharp-edged ones. This preference is believed to be rooted in evolutionary psychology, where rounded shapes are often associated with safety and harmlessness, reminiscent of natural objects like fruits, which are safe to touch and consume. In contrast, sharp shapes could indicate potential harm, such as thorns or sharp stones.

Neural data supported these behavioural results by showing that rounded buttons, especially on red and uncoloured websites, caused more activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC). The vmPFC is associated with reward processing and approach behaviour, suggesting that users find rounded buttons more appealing and are more likely to interact with them. The study also noted activation in the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) for rounded buttons, which is linked to aesthetic appraisal and positive perception of visual design.

Interestingly, the preference for rounded buttons did not vary significantly across different colours, although the neural activation patterns were most pronounced for uncoloured and red websites. This consistency across colour conditions suggests that the evolutionary preference for rounded shapes is robust and can be effectively leveraged in website design to enhance user satisfaction and engagement.

The study’s findings have significant implications for website designers and businesses, particularly in the e-commerce sector. Understanding that users’ reactions to design elements like colour and button shape are not merely subjective preferences but are deeply rooted in evolutionary mechanisms can guide more effective design strategies.

For instance, incorporating blue tones and rounded shapes could improve user experience by reducing cognitive load and enhancing trust and comfort. Conversely, designers should be cautious with the use of red and sharp shapes, as these elements may trigger subconscious associations with danger and discomfort, potentially deterring users from engaging with the site.
