Playlists were created using the Playlist Miner tool that aggregates the top tracks from the most popular public playlists on Spotify that match your search criteria. For each category,  five keywords were used to pull the top 100 tracks, then cross-referenced each list to select the top 10 that appeared the most times across all search terms.

In the case that multiple tracks feature the same number of times across all lists, lists were narrowed down to 10 using the following criteria:

  • Only one track from a particular artist/band will feature in the top 10 (the highest-ranking one will be selected).
  • A particular track will not feature in more than one themed playlist.
  • Tracks with a higher total number of features on playlists with a set keyword will be prioritised – this data is available on Playlist Miner

The top artists are those who appeared the most times across all 500 tracks aggregated for each theme, whether this is with one popular song, or with multiple tracks.

The formula for the ultimate song for each activity was revealed by calculating the average tempo and length, most popular genre, as well as scores for energy, instrumental and happiness. Data on BPM and length, as well as scores for happiness, energy and instrumental-ness, is courtesy of Chosic
