As Christmas approaches, one of the season’s most cherished traditions is preparing a treat for Santa on Christmas Eve. A new survey by food box delivery service HelloFresh, which polled 2,000 UK adults, sheds light on the snacks and drinks Santa is most likely to find waiting for him this year. The findings offer a festive glimpse into how British households embrace this enduring ritual.

Mince pies remain Santa’s favourite treat, with 41% of Brits leaving out the festive staple. Milk is the most popular drink, chosen by 29% of respondents, while 28% include carrots, presumably as a snack for the reindeer. Cookies or biscuits come in at 27%, with whisky offered by 15% of participants. Despite whisky’s presence, Santa may need to pace himself, as the survey also noted regional variations in alcoholic preferences, with beer being the top choice in Birmingham (13%).

Generational differences highlight evolving preferences. Adults aged 18–34 are more likely to favour cookies and biscuits over mince pies, which remain the top choice for older participants aged 65 and above. Younger generations also lean away from leaving out alcohol, with milk (29%) and hot chocolate (12%) emerging as their top drink choices.

Interestingly, regional quirks stand out. In Belfast and Glasgow, milk tops the list of Santa’s snacks, with 63% and 47% of respondents, respectively, choosing the drink over mince pies or other food options. Whisky finds favour in Belfast (20%), Liverpool (22%), and Manchester (21%), while parents in these cities are among the most likely to include the spirit in Santa’s offerings.

While mince pies dominate as a nationwide favourite, less popular options include eggnog (4%), Christmas pudding (5%), and mulled wine (5%). Cheese and crackers, Christmas cake, and brandy are also among the less common choices, each favoured by just 5% of respondents.

The survey reveals not only what Brits leave for Santa but also the little ways people personalise this tradition, adding a touch of excitement to Christmas Eve. These simple gestures, whether a mince pie or a glass of milk, enhance the magic of the season and build anticipation for Christmas Day.
