Pumpkin is emerging as a key ingredient in seasonal skincare lines, with new research lending weight to its growing reputation for promoting healthy skin. Extracts from the fruit and its seeds are gaining popularity for their rich nutrient profiles and potential benefits for skin health.

Several studies have reported that pumpkin and its by-products contain high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and lipids that may help support skin renewal and protection. One study on pumpkin seed extract identified compounds such as beta-carotene, vitamin E, zinc, and linoleic acid, which were associated with increased collagen density, improved moisture retention, and reduced oxidative damage. Another review of seeds from the Cucurbitaceae family, which includes pumpkin, found that they are rich in phenolic compounds, essential fatty acids, and carotenoids. These nutrients are known to help maintain skin moisture, antioxidant defence, and barrier function.

Dennis Relojo-Howell, a member of the scientific advisory board at Dermoi, said: “Pumpkin is an underrated skincare ingredient. It combines nutrients that support both the surface and deeper layers of the skin, which makes it effective for hydration, repair, and protection. Using pumpkin-based products or treatments is a simple but science-backed way to maintain healthy skin as temperatures drop.”

Pumpkin ingredients are increasingly being promoted in skincare, with emphasis placed on how the source and treatment of these actives influence their effectiveness. Industry specialists highlight that without proper scientific processing and stabilisation, these components struggle to penetrate the skin or provide meaningful results.

Pumpkin is often presented as a softer alternative to stronger actives like vitamin C or glycolic acid, but improper activation can lead to inconsistent or minimal impact. Some clinicians note that pumpkin-based serums and masks may offer mild brightening for slightly dull or uneven skin, yet caution that the natural enzymes and gentle acids found in botanical extracts can still provoke irritation, particularly in sensitive or inflamed skin.

There are also specific skin-type considerations. While no major safety alerts have been raised for pumpkin extracts, researchers note that natural variability in enzyme concentration and extraction methods means formulations may differ widely. People with conditions such as rosacea, eczema, or highly sensitive skin are advised to carry out a patch test before use. Some products may contain enzyme-based exfoliants or fruit acids that could affect a weakened skin barrier.

For consumers and beauty editors, expert advice remains consistent: look beyond the claim “contains pumpkin extract”. Assess whether a formulation provides stabilised actives, seek supporting data on efficacy, and pair use with barrier-supportive ingredients. Editors are also encouraged to ask brands for clarity about enzyme levels and acidity, since pumpkin’s benefits depend more on formulation science than on the ingredient itself.
