Researchers from Chitkara University and Birla Global University recently conducted a study that emphasised the significant role that psychological safety plays in enhancing organisational performance within India’s developing IT sector. The research, which analysed responses from 232 IT professionals across the country, underscores the importance of fostering a supportive work environment where employees feel secure, valued, and able to express themselves without fear of negative consequences. The findings were published in the Open Psychology Journal.

The study’s findings indicate that psychological safety is not just a buzzword but a critical factor in determining the overall performance of organisations. In the high-pressure environment of the IT industry, where targets, deadlines, and intense workloads are the norms, the ability of employees to freely voice concerns, share ideas, and collaborate without fear of reprisal is essential for both personal and organisational success.

Researchers found that psychological safety directly influences organisational performance, making it a key area of focus for companies aiming to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market. Psychological safety allows employees to engage fully in their roles, contributing to innovation, problem-solving, and overall efficiency. When employees feel psychologically secure, they are more likely to take initiative, make decisions, and contribute to the organisation’s strategic goals.

The research also highlights the importance of support from both supervisors and colleagues in creating a psychologically safe work environment. Perceived organisational support (POS) and perceived supervisory support (PSS) were found to have a significant impact on psychological safety, which in turn affects organisational performance. Supervisors who provide clear guidance, constructive feedback, and emotional support play a crucial role in fostering a culture of psychological safety.

Interestingly, while support from supervisors was found to be critical, the study also revealed that support from coworkers, or perceived coworker support (PCS), did not have a significant direct impact on organisational performance. This suggests that, while peer relationships are important, they may not be as influential as managerial support in creating a psychologically safe environment that enhances performance.

The study also examined the role of personal self-concept (PSC) – how employees view their own value and capabilities – in influencing organisational performance. Although PSC did not have a significant direct impact on performance, the researchers found that psychological safety fully mediated the relationship between PSC and organisational performance. This means that when employees feel psychologically safe, their self-concept is more likely to positively influence their work, leading to better performance outcomes.

Given the intense demands of the IT industry, which often involve high levels of stress and the constant need to adapt to new technologies, the findings of this study have important implications for how companies approach employee well-being and organisational development. The IT sector is one of the most competitive and fast-paced industries globally, and in India, it plays a pivotal role in the economy. Ensuring that employees feel psychologically safe can help companies not only retain talent but also foster a more innovative and productive workforce.

Moreover, with the IT sector being a major driver of India’s economic growth, the study suggests that companies which prioritise psychological safety may gain a competitive edge. Organisations that invest in creating a supportive and psychologically safe environment are likely to see improvements in employee retention, job satisfaction, and overall organisational performance.
