Preventing Cavities: What Do You Need to Know?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

If you’re concerned about your oral health, you’re not alone. Many people suffer from cavities, a common dental problem that can lead to more severe problems if left untreated. In this blog post, we will be discussing what you need to know about cavities, including how to help prevent their formation.

What is a cavity?

But first, what exactly is a cavity? Cavities can be defined by decay on part of your teeth that can lead to holes. There are three kinds of cavities to be aware of: smooth surface cavities, pit or fissure cavities, and root cavities.

Smooth surface cavities are the most common, these appear on the smooth surface of your teeth. The most severe kind of cavity to have is a root cavity.

What are the main causes of cavities?

There are a few ways in which cavities are formed. These include:

  • Poor oral hygiene. Neglecting your oral health is one of the main reasons why cavities are formed. Not brushing away plaque can lead to build-up, which can cause tooth decay and cavities. It’s important to  brush thoroughly twice a day, with flossing and mouthwash incorporated too.
  • Sugar consumption. Eating and drinking a lot of sugary food and beverages can lead to tooth decay and cavities. This is because when sugar enters the mouth, it reacts to bacteria on the teeth, which produces acid, which dissolves the enamel protecting your teeth. This can lead to the formation of cavities.

How can you prevent cavities from forming?

There are a number of ways on which you can help prevent cavities and tooth decay. When it comes to this common dental problem, prevention is key. The following are some effective prevention tips:

Improve your oral hygiene

Brushing regularly and thoroughly is the best way to prevent plaque build-up and protect your teeth from decay. You should ensure you’re using a fluoride toothpaste, and brushing the hard-to-reach areas too. Flossing is another method to incorporate into your oral hygiene routine, as it helps to rid your mouth of food particles which can cause plaque. As well as brushing and flossing, mouthwash should also be used to help wash away food particles, keeping your teeth and gums protected.

Maintain a healthy diet

Reducing your sugar consumption is another key way to help prevent cavities from forming. Avoiding sugary beverages such as fizzy drinks and limiting your intake of sugary food can help reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth, which is responsible for cavity formation.

Foods such as dairy products, leafy greens, and nuts can help to remineralise enamel, making your teeth stronger. Try incorporating these foods into your diet where possible.

Regular dental clinic visits

You may not be aware when a cavity is forming, which is why it’s always best to visit your local dental clinic regularly to ensure early prevention. Preventing cavities is much easier than treating them, and if your dentist spots the formation of one, there’s a good chance you won’t need much treatment.
