The MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit welcomes approaches from those with an interest in pursuing a PhD studentship at the Unit. We provide diverse training opportunities for all aspects of research and for transferable academic and generic skills. The vast majority of our past students have gone on to work in academic research jobs. Use these links to find what some of our former and current students say about being a PhD student in the unit and their student experiences.
Funded MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit studentships at the University of Glasgow are advertised via findaphd.com, University webpages and personal contacts, around December-January each year. These are 3-year positions for those who have a Masters degree or equivalent training in an appropriate scientific discipline, or 4-year positions in order that an appropriate master’s degree can be attained prior to commencing the doctorate.
We also welcome approaches at any time from those with funding from other sources who wish to propose a topic relevant to the Unit’s programmes of work. Potential applicants should approach the Programme Leader of the programme to which they think their proposed topic is most relevant. The unit currently has six programmes: Complexity in health improvement; Measurement and analysis of socio-economic inequalities in health; Social relationships and health improvement; Understanding and improving health within settings and organisations; Neighbourhoods and communities; and Informing healthy public policy. Contact details are contained within the programme pages. Any applicant who has a specific topic area that fits with the Unit’s mission, but for which they are not sure which programme leader(s) to contact, should send a brief outline of their proposed topic to Professor Laurence Moore, Unit Director (Laurence.Moore@glasgow.ac.uk) who will advise on how to proceed further.
