Now Is the Perfect Time for a Digital Detox. Here’s How to Do It

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As pupils return to school, now is an ideal opportunity to book a last-minute staycation and squeeze in some relaxation before the hectic pace of autumn sets in. But how can you make the most of your short break?

Interest in last-minute holidays across the UK has skyrocketed, with searches for “last minute holidays uk” increasing by an impressive 5,800% compared to this time last year. Even more specifically, searches for “lodges with hot tubs” have surged by 450% and “airbnbs with hot tubs” by 750%, highlighting just how keen Brits are to find a brief escape.

To help families unwind, The Wellness Co. has compiled data on staycations across the UK, pinpointing the locations that offer the best calming amenities and sharing expert tips on maximising the experience.

Currently, there are over 21,000 staycation lodges, cottages, and homes available across the UK and Ireland, meaning that a peaceful retreat is often just a short drive away.

Out of these properties, 87% have gardens, offering a perfect spot to soak in fresh air and nature. Furthermore, 59% are pet-friendly, allowing families to bring along their furry companions. For those seeking a cosy atmosphere, 38% of locations feature open fires, while 14% offer hot tubs to enhance relaxation. And if you’re looking to fully unplug, 4% of these locations don’t have broadband, allowing guests to truly experience a digital detox.

Amenities at staycation properties

  • Gardens: 87%
  • Pet friendly: 59%
  • Near fishing: 50%
  • Near a pub: 44%
  • Open fire: 38%
  • Hot tub: 14%
  • Swimming pool: 4%
  • No broadband: 4%

To help travellers fully unwind during their break, experts at The Wellness Co. have outlined five essential tips for switching off and making the most of a digital detox:

  • No work rule. Establish a “no work” rule during your stay. Consider a fun twist by introducing a jar where anyone who mentions work or school has to contribute money. The funds can then be used for a fun holiday activity. The goal is to let go of external pressures and be present in the moment.
  • Make use of spa facilities. If your staycation spot includes spa amenities like a hot tub, take time each day to enjoy them. The warm water and jets provide a therapeutic effect, helping to relax muscles and ease any built-up stress or anxiety.
  • Embrace a digital detox. Disconnect from phones, tablets, and screens to engage fully with your surroundings. By stepping away from the digital world, you’ll enhance your mindfulness, allowing you to truly enjoy the holiday and connect with loved ones.
  • Quality family time. This break might be one of the last chances for uninterrupted family time before the new term begins. Take advantage of it by working together on activities, enjoying meaningful conversations, and appreciating each other’s company.
  • Try something new. Whether it’s attempting a new water sport, fishing, or experimenting with a new recipe, trying something novel releases dopamine in the brain. This not only helps distract from work-related thoughts but also creates opportunities for deeper connections with family and a more enjoyable holiday experience.

Now is the perfect time to press pause, recharge, and enjoy the final days of summer with a relaxing staycation that promotes both mental and physical well-being.
