It is indeed nothing new for any of you, the old enemy, depression, enters your life and once again you go to visit your psychiatrist or your therapist recommends you to do so. Then again, you have been prescribed some SSRI, SNRI, or even other drugs.

They may work or may not but it seems that this is the mainstream way worldwide and it has been for a long time to treat depression. Of course, I should mention psychotherapeutic ways like CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) too that are used in the process of treating depression.

But what if we as not only scholars but also students or ones who are on the path of becoming experts consider a new and somehow unique and not-so-mainstream way to approach depression?

I’m talking about the use of new drugs called nootropics that are developed to enhance cognitive functions for mental disorders like depression.

Before I dive deeper into this matter let me just take a brief look at what depression is, though not so many people especially modern ones are unfamiliar with it.

According to DSM-5, which is the latest updated diagnosis book for psychiatrists and psychologists, depression is a mental disorder and a mood disorder in particular that must have these symptoms along with itself for two constant weeks. These symptoms include:

  • Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness, or hopelessness
  • Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies, or sports
  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much

Five symptoms out of nine are enough for the expert to diagnose depression in an individual however I don’t intend to make a how-to list for diagnosing depression here and without a doubt, there are many considerations before the final ultimate diagnosis is made by the expert.

As I mentioned before, treatment for depression is mostly some drugs and methods that are proven to work in many cases yet still, the problem exists on a large scale.

And now what are nootropics? well, if you’re a student then no matter how much of a good boy/girl you look like or you are, probably you know about them or have heard about them. Nootropics are drugs and supplements that boost and enhance cognitive functions like memory and learning and Noopept is one of the most newer ones.

Noopept works by improving memory by increasing brain chemicals that affect memory parts of the brain and has antioxidant effects on the brain.

It has been shown by the research that Noopept also regulates other important neurotransmitters that mostly affect learning and memory but also mood. Although there is still much work to be done on Noopept to be fully understood, most of the research shows that it helps the brain in many ways and specifically improves blood circulation in some parts of it. Most likely this is one of the main reasons that noopept studies are continuing on patients that are recovering from a stroke.

Now, what if we take a look at the depression problem from a new point of view?

Yes, maybe what they say about depression and chemical imbalance is partially or completely true and depression is dysregulation of serotonin and other brain chemicals like dopamine. What exactly causes depression, is not my point here nor do I want to discuss the biological view of depression pathology.

I want to propose that a new path begins in which we consider using a nootropic as a main and new drug or an add-on for the treatment of depression. Whether depression is caused by serotonin imbalance or dysfunction in other brain parts Noopept has the ability to be considered a unique candidate to be tested on individuals with depression. But again, one may ask why? well, it is simple to understand. It has not shown any particular side effects or worsening of depressive symptoms and can mildly benefit mood. Not just that but it has great effects on memory and of course memory is always affected by depression. And at last, it improves blood circulation in the brain.

Considering any particular brain inefficiency to be the cause of depression not only this drug can be a potential help but it may be a good point for researchers and scholars to start viewing psychological problems and disorders and their treatments differently. Maybe a drug or even an approach isn’t meant to be for a particular problem or it has been developed to solve another but has the potential to aid in treating other disorders. Perhaps it’s time for all of us to give birth to something lost in us. Scientific creativity sometimes seems odd or fringe.
