A recent study has shed light on the lived experiences of loneliness in older adults and how emerging technology could offer a lifeline to those affected. A team of experts at King’s College London conducted the study with the goal of better understanding loneliness in later life and offering suggestions for how technology can address this growing public health issue. The findings were published in the International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being.
Loneliness, particularly among the elderly, has become a pressing issue in the UK, with nearly one in four older adults experiencing this emotional state. The study, conducted through a series of interviews with 60 participants aged 65 and over, revealed that loneliness is a deeply personal experience. Participants described a wide range of responses to loneliness, including emotional distress, behavioural changes, and physical symptoms such as difficulty sleeping or overeating. Many interviewees linked their feelings of isolation to age-related losses, such as the death of loved ones or a decline in physical ability, which made socialising more difficult.
One of the key findings was the individualised nature of loneliness, with older adults exhibiting different coping strategies depending on their circumstances and personalities. For some, keeping busy through hobbies or social activities helped alleviate feelings of isolation. Others, however, struggled to form meaningful connections, especially if they suffered from depression or anxiety. These findings underscore the complexity of loneliness and the need for tailored solutions.
The research highlights how modern technology might offer some answers. The “Design for Healthy Ageing: a smart system to detect loneliness in older people” (DELONELINESS) project, linked to the study, is exploring ways to use wearable and in-home sensors to monitor loneliness-related behaviours, such as reduced social contact or increased television watching. By detecting early signs of loneliness, these devices could offer interventions before the emotional impact becomes severe.
Wearable technology is already being used to monitor health metrics such as heart rate and sleep patterns, and the study suggests that similar systems could track loneliness indicators. This approach could provide invaluable data on when and how individuals begin to experience isolation, allowing carers or healthcare providers to step in with timely support. However, the researchers caution that any such technology must be personalised, taking into account the unique circumstances and emotional needs of each user.
The study also points out that while technology offers great potential, it must be implemented alongside human interventions. Older adults in the study emphasised the importance of maintaining relationships with family and friends. Thus, technology should be seen as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, human interaction.
