A straightforward differentiation between the facts and myths will help you take action at the right time.

We have debunked some common myths about breast cancer and stated clear facts:

Myth 1: You will not develop breast cancer if you do not have a family history

Family history has nothing to do with the development of breast cancer in your body. This cancer is more than just an inherited ailment. In fact, many studies have suggested that a huge fraction of women suffering from breast cancer do not have any family history. Only 5–10% of people diagnosed with this disease had a history of breast cancer in their family.

Myth 2: Wearing a bra causes breast cancer

Thanks to some media coverage, many people have a misconception that wearing a tight bra can increase the risk of breast cancer. However, it is a plain myth. No evidence supports this claim. Do not get fooled by everything that the media has to say.

Myth 3: You will not develop breast cancer if you have a healthy lifestyle

Eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and reducing the intake of cigarettes and alcohol are good for your health. These habits may as well lower down your risk of developing breast cancer. However, they do not completely prevent the same. There is always a possibility that you may develop breast cancer.

Myth 4: Men do not develop breast cancer

One of the biggest myths that have been doing rounds regarding breast cancer is that only women suffer from breast cancer. But do you know that men, too, may develop this cancer? Breast cancer in men is a very rare episode. But it is not impossible. Symptoms of male breast cancer are very similar to that of females. The causes of breast cancer in men are obesity, unhealthy lifestyle, alcohol consumption, conditions affecting the prostate, etc.

Myth 5: Young women do not suffer from breast cancer

A majority of breast cancers develop in women over 50 years of age. But at the same time, it cannot be concluded that young women do not suffer from the problem at all. Women of all ages are prone to developing breast cancer for one reason or the other. It is, therefore, crucial to conduct a self-examination test and pay attention to all the signs and symptoms. Take immediate action if you suffer from the symptoms such as a change in breast texture, color, discharge from the nipples, lump in the breast or around the armpit, etc.

Myth 6: All lumps signal towards the occurrence of breast cancer

A lump on your breast is not always a sign of breast cancer. Some of the lumps are non-cancerous lumps. They may occur because of many other factors. These lumps are termed benign lumps. Developing these lumps or cysts is very common among women between 35-50 years of age. The cause of such lumps may be menopause, breast abscesses, or any other. A proper screening or check-up with your doctor is compulsory in either case.

Breast cancer comes with many warning signs and also brings a lot of myths around. It is crucial to differentiate between facts and myths regarding this disease. That being said, always be wary about the warning signs of the disease.
