The good thing about medicine is there are so many options for what to specialise in. And if you’re bored, you can move to a specialty…with some additional training. But medicine is a constant cycle of training. Trust me, you’ll get used to it.
Emergency medicine
Not everyone would call it interesting, but it definitely will keep you on your toes.
Emergency medicine is one of the most interesting specialties for someone who likes to be at the center of what we’d call “drama”. You’ll see anything from gunshot wounds to things getting stuck where they shouldn’t get stuck.
Knowing how not to panic, remembering one hundred things at once, and handling more than one patient are crucial abilities for anybody working in this domain.
Yes, this isn’t for everyone, but we promise it is one of the most interesting, exciting, and rewarding specialties you can explore. You could see what it’s like by working with companies like Masc Medical to find an emergency department vacancy.
Dermatology
Dermatology is perhaps one of the most exciting right now. Everyone is interested in cosmetics, and aesthetics, and spends tonnes of money on it. If you want to specialise in something with the potential to open a private practice, dermatology is the way to go.
Dermatologists diagnose and treat skin diseases, including skin cancer, acne, and eczema, and offer procedures like Botox and laser treatments as part of their practice. Botox and laser treatments are where the money is at right now.
And we have to say that better work-life balance is better than most other specialties. Most dermatologists work from 9-5 with very few emergencies and a high level of satisfaction in the specialty. And if private clinics are involved, it’s even better!
Family medicine
Family medicine isn’t exactly the one people would first jump to, but we don’t see why it shouldn’t be.
It’s a nice, relatively easy, relatively stress-free avenue of medicine that, again, if you have a private practice, can generate an attractive income.
If you like the idea of caring for the same patients through different stages of their lives, you should consider practicing family medicine. Family practitioners provide healthcare services to patients of all ages and address all possible health concerns, including preventive care, monitoring patients’ conditions, and administering vaccines. It’s an all-in-one opportunity to see it all without the stress of seeing it all, if that makes sense?
As a specialty, family medicine is quite diverse and thus offers a wide scope of practice to its practitioners, which is mentally challenging for practitioners who do not like boredom. Most of the time, family doctors are the first point of contact for patients who are ill and help in the prevention of future disease events. It’s an enjoyable specialty for those who remain committed to the care of the patients and the community.
You have to think about what you’ll like and won’t like – everyone is different. And what might work for one person might not work for you. You’ll definitely find out as you continue through the process of learning and training.
