Mindful Eating Patterns Differ Among Male and Female Students, Study Reveals

Mindful eating is about being fully attentive to the food we eat, savouring each bite, and listening to our body’s hunger and satiety cues. This approach to eating emphasises a non-judgmental awareness of the physical and emotional sensations associated with eating.

Mindful eating also encourages us to acknowledge the origins of our food, considering the effort and resources that have gone into its production. By doing so, it fosters a deeper appreciation and a more meaningful connection with our meals. This practice can lead to healthier eating habits, as it helps in recognising and respecting our body’s natural signals, reducing the likelihood of overeating. 

Recent research has shed light on how mindful eating habits vary significantly between male and female students, revealing intriguing gender differences in their approach to food and eating behaviours.

The study offers new insights into the importance of considering gender when promoting healthy eating habits, especially among young students.

The findings were published in the journal Prisma Sains.

The study involved 95 secondary school students from VIII and IX grades in a public school. The researchers used the Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ) to evaluate the students’ eating behaviours across various dimensions.

The research found notable gender differences in mindful eating dimensions. Males scored higher in dimensions such as disinhibition (the inability to stop eating) and awareness (paying attention to feelings and physical senses towards foods). In contrast, females exhibited higher scores in responding to emotional cues and being distracted while eating.

These findings are significant for understanding how males and females relate differently to food. Males may be more aware of their eating habits but they also tend to eat without restraint. Females, on the other hand, appear more influenced by their emotional states, which can lead to distracted eating. This understanding is crucial for developing gender-specific strategies in nutritional education and interventions.

The study underscores the importance of incorporating mindful eating practices into school curriculums. Tailoring these practices to address gender-specific challenges can contribute significantly to promoting healthier eating habits among students.
