Lacidipine is a medication that is used to treat hypertension, or high blood pressure. It works by relaxing the blood vessels, which helps to lower blood pressure.

History

Lacidipine was first developed in the late 1980s by Recordati, an Italian pharmaceutical company, and was later approved for use in several countries, including the UK, Japan, and Italy.

The discovery of calcium channel blockers dates back to the 1960s, when researchers found that these drugs could affect the movement of calcium ions across cell membranes. Calcium plays a critical role in many cellular processes, including muscle contraction, neurotransmitter release, and hormone secretion. By blocking calcium channels in the cell membrane, calcium channel blockers can decrease muscle tone and relax blood vessels, which can help to lower blood pressure.

The first calcium channel blockers, such as verapamil and nifedipine, were developed in the 1970s and quickly became popular treatments for hypertension and angina. These drugs were effective at reducing blood pressure, but they also had several limitations. For example, they had a short duration of action and were associated with several side effects, such as headache, flushing, and dizziness.

Side effects

While it can be an effective treatment for hypertension, like all medications, lacidipine can cause side effects.

  • Dizziness and lightheadedness. One of the most common side effects of lacidipine is dizziness and lightheadedness. This can occur when you stand up quickly or move around too quickly, and can make you feel unsteady on your feet. If you experience dizziness or lightheadedness while taking lacidipine, it is important to take precautions to avoid falling or injuring yourself.
  • Headaches. Headaches are another common side effect of lacidipine. While these headaches are usually mild and temporary, they can be persistent and bothersome for some people. If you experience frequent headaches while taking lacidipine, talk to your doctor about ways to manage the pain.
  • Flushing. Flushing, or a sensation of warmth in the face, neck, or chest, is another potential side effect of lacidipine. This can be uncomfortable, but it is usually not serious. If you experience flushing while taking lacidipine, try to stay cool and hydrated, and avoid alcohol and spicy foods.
  • Nausea and vomiting. Some people may experience nausea and vomiting while taking lacidipine. This can be especially problematic for people who already have digestive issues. If you experience persistent nausea or vomiting while taking lacidipine, talk to your doctor about adjusting your dosage or switching to a different medication.
  • Oedema. Oedema, or swelling of the ankles, feet, or legs, is another potential side effect of lacidipine. This occurs when excess fluid builds up in the body’s tissues. While oedema is usually not harmful, it can be uncomfortable and unsightly. If you experience oedema while taking lacidipine, talk to your doctor about ways to manage the swelling.
  • Palpitations. Palpitations, or a racing or irregular heartbeat, can occur as a side effect of lacidipine. While this can be scary, it is usually not serious. If you experience persistent palpitations while taking lacidipine, talk to your doctor about adjusting your dosage or switching to a different medication.
  • Fatigue and weakness. Some people may experience fatigue and weakness while taking lacidipine. This can be especially problematic for people who need to be alert and focused during the day. If you experience persistent fatigue or weakness while taking lacidipine, talk to your doctor about adjusting your dosage or switching to a different medication.
  • Allergic reactions. In rare cases, some people may experience allergic reactions while taking lacidipine. This can include symptoms such as hives, rash, itching, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Takeaway

While lacidipine can be an effective treatment for hypertension, it can also cause side effects. If you experience any of the side effects listed above while taking lacidipine, talk to your doctor about ways to manage the symptoms. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, seek medical attention immediately. As with any medication, it is important to take lacidipine as directed by your doctor, and to report any side effects to your healthcare provider.
