A new ranking by global car hire company Avis has placed London as the second-best European city for outdoor exercise and wellness. The study highlights cities where travellers can enjoy urban exploration alongside access to nature, clean air, and quality trails.

The research analysed 100 cities across Europe, focusing on hiking, running, and cycling routes as well as local air quality. As interest in active holidays and sustainable travel continues to rise, the findings point to destinations best equipped to support physical activity during trips.

Zürich earned the top spot for outdoor fitness, combining diverse trail options, scenic Alpine surroundings, and some of the cleanest urban air in Europe. The Swiss city offers over 200 hiking routes, 240 running trails, and 150 cycling paths. The Uetliberg Trail provides sweeping views over the lake and mountains, and the annual Zürich Marathon each April is known as one of the continent’s most scenic races.

London came in second, offering the highest number of mapped hiking and running routes in the study. Despite its size and population, the city benefits from widespread green space, including 495 hiking trails and 500 running paths. Notable routes include the Thames Path and Hampstead Heath. The London Marathon, held every April, remains a major international sporting event that attracts professional and amateur runners from around the world.

Budapest ranked closely behind, with more than 240 hiking and running routes. Many of these pass through the city’s wooded hills and historic landscapes. The Buda Hills provide expansive views and trail options, while Margaret Island, located in the middle of the Danube, is a favourite among local runners. With a trail rating average of 4.2 and cleaner air than several other Eastern European capitals, Budapest is gaining popularity among travellers looking for both cultural and active experiences.

The top 20 destinations include cities across Portugal, Spain, and Germany, offering a variety of locations for those planning fitness-focused European holidays.

This ranking aligns with growing demand for wellness travel. Global ecotourism is expected to reach $279 billion by 2025, an increase of 13.1% from 2023. Meanwhile, 83% of travellers consider sustainable travel important, though nearly half believe options remain limited. Adventure travel companies report growth, with 73% seeing revenue increases in the past year, mainly under 25%.

Avis relied on reputable sources for the study. Trail data came from AllTrails.com, where users submit and rate routes. London’s network includes over 645 running and 376 hiking trails. Zürich has 583 running trails and 489 hiking routes. Budapest offers 228 running paths and 234 hiking options. Air quality data was sourced from IQAir and adjusted based on each city’s population and daily pollution levels.

Experts note the appeal of these cities lies in their ability to offer relief from urban stress while encouraging physical well-being. In London, nearly half the land area is classified as green space, providing crucial outlets for exercise as awareness grows about the link between outdoor activity and mental health. Zürich and Budapest reflect similar patterns, where natural settings enhance everyday life.

As interest in wellness-oriented travel increases, rankings like this help guide travellers toward destinations that support eco-conscious and health-focused choices. According to the American Express 2025 Global Travel Trends Report, 74% of respondents plan one to three domestic trips, and 59% are considering international travel that often includes wellness elements. Deloitte’s recent survey shows 53% of Americans plan leisure holidays in 2025, up from 48% in 2024.
