Laundry Expert Reveals You’re Probably Making This One Simple Mistake When Washing Linen Shirts

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s officially linen shirt season, and this menswear staple has seen a huge spike in searches over the past month, with 23k searches over the past month, according to Google Trends. However, according to experts, you’re probably washing your favourite linen shirt all wrong.

As the weather heats up, product expert Lance Millet, product sourcing consultant at online menswear clothing brand Raging Bull has unveiled the one mistake most of us make when washing linen shirts: “You should never wash your linens at a temperature higher than 30°C, as this can cause the fabric to shrink. Ideally, linen shirts should be washed on your washing machine’s gentle cycle or by hand in lukewarm water.

“Many people don’t realise that linen is resistant to bacteria as it doesn’t hold moisture. This means that it doesn’t tend to catch odorous smells and therefore doesn’t need to be washed at a high temperature to be thoroughly cleaned.”

Natalie shares her top tips on caring for linen shirts below:

Always iron inside out

“Linen shirts should always be ironed inside out and on medium heat to avoid any unintentional damage. Linen is notoriously known for creasing easily, so a top tip is to iron the garment whilst it’s slightly damp or use a water spray or steam setting to eliminate creases.”

Use white wine vinegar to remove stains

“Quite often, linen shirts come in light or white colours, which means the smallest mark or stain can be quite obvious. If you do spill anything on linen, remove any excess straight away and dab the fabric gently and lightly with a clean cloth soaked in white wine vinegar. Then, wash the garment in cold water to prevent the stain from setting. Always avoid any cleaning product containing bleach, as this can damage the fabric.”

Store your linens properly to keep them at their best

“Between wears and seasons, be sure to store your linens properly to preserve the quality and longevity of the garment. Your shirt should be clean and completely dry to prevent mildew or odour. Before the first wear of the season, refresh the shirt by airing it out or giving it a gentle wash.

“When you’re storing them away after summer, use air-tight containers, vacuum-sealed bags or acid-free tissue paper to protect the fabric from moisture, dust and pests.”

Styling your linen shirt

Natalie Chapman, senior fashion designer at Raging Bull, explains why the versatile linen shirt is such a menswear summer staple.

“Linen is the perfect breathable fabric to keep you feeling cool and fresh throughout the day, making it perfect for those hot summer days.

“It is a true classic, summer staple that I think is here to stay. As sustainability and longevity become increasingly important to customers, classic shapes and fabrics such as the linen shirt are the perfect choice, as they can be worn for almost any occasion.

“For summer BBQs and garden parties, team it with twill chino or cargo shorts, double up and wear loose linen shorts with your shirt on holiday; or, for a more formal look for a wedding or the races, enhance your linen shirt with a linen mix suit or blazer and consider a cotton tie.”
