The 10 Largest Psychological Organisations in the World

There are amazing developments occurring in the field of psychology globally, and these developments are taking place because of the collaboration and innovation being promoted by different psychological associations around the world.

Have you ever wondered which psychological associations have the largest memberships? 

1. American Psychological Association

115,700 – The APA is the leading scientific and professional organisation representing psychology in the US, with more than 115,700 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants, and students as its members.

2. British Psychological Society

49,300 – The British Psychological Society is the representative body for psychology and psychologists in the UK, and it is responsible for the promotion of excellence and ethical practice in the scientific, educational, and practical applications of the discipline.

3. Association for Psychological Science

33,000 – The Association for Psychological Science (previously the American Psychological Society) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the advancement of scientific psychology and its representation at the national and international level.

4. Spanish Psychological Association

30,000 – The General Council of Officers’ Associations of Psychologists was created by Law 7/2005, of 13th May. It constitutes the coordinating and representative body of the Official Psychologists’ Colleges and the Autonomous Councils, as appropriate, regarding the functions which are its own and regulated in its statutes, at the national and international levels.

5. Australian Psychological Society

22,000 – The APS is the largest professional body representing psychologists in Australia. It has a code of ethics that APS members must agree to abide by and a recommendation of appropriate fees charged for services.

6. Federation of German Psychologists’ Associations

17,500 – The Federation of German Psychologists’ Associations was established by the Association of German Professional Psychologists (BDP) and the German Psychological Society (DGPs) in 1958. 

7. Dutch Association of Psychologists

13,000 – The representation of the individual and collective interests of psychologists forms the core business of the services provided by the Dutch Association of Psychologists (NIP).

8. Korean Psychological Association

8,400 – The Korean Psychological Association issues licences in the areas of clinical psychology, counselling psychology, developmental psychology, industrial and organisational psychology, forensic psychology, addiction psychology and health psychology, and coaching psychology, thereby helping majors in psychology advance into society.

9. Swedish Psychological Association and Japanese Psychological Association

8,000 – The Swedish Psychological Association is the union and professional organisation for the country’s psychologists. The association focuses primarily on members’ wages and terms of employment.

Also, at number 9 is the Japanese Psychological Association (JPA), with 8,000 members. JPA was founded as an academic organisation on 7th April 1927. As the oldest national psychological association in Japan, they have contributed to the development of Japanese psychological activities through a membership base that includes both academic researchers and professional practitioners.

10. Danish Psychological Association

7163 – The Danish Psychological Association is the official professional and scientific organisation representing psychologists in Denmark. They represent 10,000 professionals and students.

Note: In case you’re wondering about the membership of the European Federation of Psychologists’ Association (EFPA), it’s 300,000. It was not included in the ranking because it’s an umbrella organisation.
