A new study has revealed a significant link between the perceived impact of climate change and mental health challenges among high school students in Kenya. The research, which surveyed 2,652 students from ten schools across the country, highlights growing concerns about how climate-related anxieties are affecting the younger generation, particularly in vulnerable rural communities.
The study, published in the journal BMC Psychiatry, underscores the emotional toll that climate change is exerting on adolescents. It found that nearly 70% of the students expressed worry about the threats posed by climate change, with a significant proportion reporting feelings of anxiety, anger, fear, and powerlessness. These emotions were notably more prevalent among female students and those living in rural areas, where the effects of climate change, such as droughts and food shortages, are most acutely felt.
The research team, under the direction of Professor David Ndetei, sought to investigate the connections between these climate-related fears and more serious mental health conditions, such as signs of depression, anxiety, and even suicidality. Using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), a widely recognised tool for assessing psychological health, the study found that students who reported higher levels of worry about climate change were significantly more likely to exhibit emotional symptoms and conduct problems.
Gender differences were particularly striking in the findings. Female students were more likely to report feeling afraid and anxious about climate change compared to their male counterparts. This gender disparity is consistent with global trends that show women and girls often bear a disproportionate psychological burden in the face of environmental crises.
The study also highlighted a worrying link between climate change-related fears and suicidality among the students. Those who felt powerless or extremely worried about the future were more likely to have experienced suicidal thoughts or made suicide plans. This alarming connection points to the urgent need for targeted mental health interventions in schools, especially in regions severely affected by climate change.
The authors of the study stress that while the physical impacts of climate change, such as floods and droughts, are well-documented, the psychological consequences are often overlooked. They argue that the emotional and mental health effects could be even more widespread and long-lasting, particularly in low and middle-income countries like Kenya, where resources for mental health support are limited.
The authors called for greater awareness and action to address the mental health impacts of climate change on young people. He emphasised the need for comprehensive strategies that include not only environmental policies but also mental health programmes tailored to help students cope with the stress and anxiety caused by the climate crisis.
The study’s findings are a stark reminder of the multifaceted impact of climate change on society. As the climate crisis deepens, its effects are being felt not just in the physical environment, but also in the minds of the next generation, who are increasingly anxious about the future they will inherit. The researchers hope that their work will spark more attention and resources towards addressing the mental health needs of young people in the face of a rapidly changing world.
