In 2025, there has been a significant increase in global interest regarding sleep improvement. Google Trends data indicates that searches for “how to improve sleep” have escalated by 257%, reaching their highest point since tracking commenced over two decades ago. Additionally, searches for “sleep better” and “help to sleep” have risen by 167% and 146%, respectively, reflecting a growing global concern about sleep quality.
Burak Özdemir, founder of Online Alarm Kur, said: “With Lord Huron’s ‘The Night We Met’ crowned the perfect lullaby, and other melancholic and poetic ballads by big names like Coldplay and Cigarettes After Sex appearing popular on relaxing playlists, it highlights that indie and alternative are the most effective music genres in helping many to unwind. This aligns with research that has found that calming and soft vocals can help promote relaxation, helping you to switch off from the day and aiding sleep quality.”
Music has long been recognised as a tool for relaxation and stress reduction. Calming melodies and soothing vocals can slow heart rates and ease anxiety, facilitating the transition into sleep. The prominence of indie and alternative tracks in sleep playlists suggests that these genres, with their mellow tones and reflective lyrics, resonate with individuals seeking restful sleep.
The increasing interest in sleep improvement strategies underscores a global recognition of sleep’s vital role in overall health. Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to various health issues, including impaired cognitive function, weakened immune response, and increased risk of chronic diseases. Incorporating music into bedtime routines offers a non-pharmacological approach to enhance sleep quality.
The intersection of music and sleep presents a promising avenue for those seeking to improve their rest. As global interest in sleep health intensifies, the integration of calming music, particularly from indie and alternative genres, into nightly routines may serve as an effective strategy to promote relaxation and enhance sleep quality.
