refuse alcohol

Icelandair has unveiled its Booze-Free Friendly Index, highlighting the best destinations for those embarking on a Dry January journey. With 53 million Americans swapping alcohol for mindful activities this month, the study offers a unique guide to staying sober while exploring the world.

Dubai, Marrakech, and Denpasar emerged as the top global cities for a booze-free escape, blending wellness activities, entertainment, and low-alcohol settings. Among US destinations, Washington, D.C., takes the lead, while Rome shines in Europe as a top spot for those seeking alcohol-free experiences.

The Booze-Free Friendly Index evaluated 55 cities worldwide, considering factors such as the number of bars, average alcohol consumption, wellness options, and non-alcoholic evening activities. Dubai claimed the highest score of 18.5 out of 22, boasting an extensive range of wellness experiences. Visitors can enjoy 399 activities, including luxury spas, gyms, and bathhouses, ensuring a relaxing and health-focused stay.

Marrakech and Denpasar secured the second and third positions globally, with scores of 18 and 17.4, respectively. Marrakech offers soothing yoga retreats, traditional spa treatments, and bustling souks, while Denpasar’s tranquil beachfront resorts and holistic therapies attract those seeking a mindful escape.

US and European Highlights

In the United States, Washington, DC, ranks as the top booze-free destination with a score of 12.8 out of 22. It is followed by New York City (12.1), offering a mix of cultural and alcohol-free nightlife experiences. Boston, however, falls to the bottom of the US rankings with a score of just 7.2.

Rome leads Europe with a score of 15.2, providing a variety of evening activities such as cooking classes and ghost tours. Reykjavik and Paris also stand out, scoring 13.1 and 11.9, respectively, with a mix of wellness-focused and cultural options. London takes fourth place as the UK’s best city for a sober trip.

Cities to avoid

For those committed to staying alcohol-free, Hamburg, Liverpool, and Manchester were deemed less ideal, scoring poorly on the Booze-Free Friendly Index. These cities’ nightlife and drinking culture overshadow their limited wellness offerings.
