Robert Tomo, a Freeport resident, dedicates his time and resources to caring for feral cats in his neighbourhood. Each day, he ventures out to feed the cats, ensuring they have full bellies and a semblance of care in their otherwise harsh lives. His kindness doesn’t stop at food – Robert also purchases cat toys and provides medical care for injured or ill cats, showing a deep commitment to their well-being. For him, this is more than just an act of kindness; it is a mission to help neglected animals who often face dangers such as being hit by cars while scavenging for food.
On average, Robert spends about $50 a week and more than an hour a day tending to the cats. His presence is eagerly anticipated, with the cats running towards him as soon as they hear or see him. Their excitement is so palpable that they sometimes attempt to eat directly from the can before Robert can even transfer the food into their feeding bowls. These bowls, often repurposed restaurant takeout dishes, are washed daily to maintain hygiene, underscoring Robert’s dedication to their care.
For Robert, each cat has its own identity and name. Among his feline friends are Mamas, Little Feet’s, Grandpa, Sleepy Head, Happy Face, and many others. Naming them reflects the bond he has formed with these animals, and he can often identify familial ties among them. He has noticed that many of the cats in the neighbourhood are related, with distinctive colour patterns appearing in cats up to ten blocks apart.
Robert’s compassion goes beyond feeding. He has constructed makeshift cat houses using plastic bins and straw bedding to provide warmth and comfort during colder months. These shelters offer a safe haven for the cats, particularly during harsh weather conditions. Additionally, Robert has taken it upon himself to bring some of the cats to the vet for treatment when they are injured or sick, covering the expenses out of his own pocket. To improve their health, he has also purchased cat vitamins and eye drops, demonstrating his commitment to their overall well-being.
Despite his generosity, Robert’s efforts are sometimes met with amusing yet peculiar “thank you” gestures from the cats. Occasionally, a cat will leave him a gift, such as a dead bird or mouse, a token of their gratitude in their own way. One particularly unique cat once brought Robert pieces of paper, which seemed to hold some significance to the feline. The highlight of these offerings came when the cat brought him a $5 bill, earning it the fitting name Money Bags. Such moments add a touch of humour and wonder to Robert’s daily interactions with his furry companions.
Robert’s dedication to these animals serves as a reminder of the impact one individual can have on the lives of others, even those without a voice. He wishes more people would show kindness not only to animals but also to one another. His selflessness and compassion inspire those who know him, proving that small acts of kindness can make a world of difference, even to the least expected recipients.
Through his daily efforts, Robert has created a unique bond with the feral cats of Freeport, providing them with not just food and shelter but also love and care. His story highlights the often-overlooked plight of feral cats and serves as a call to action for others to extend compassion to all living beings.
