No one expects a fire to happen in their home, but being prepared can make all the difference in ensuring your family’s safety. The first thing many people think about when they think about personal preparedness is to have a food storage stock. One thing that many people forget to include is a well-thought-out fire escape plan, which will help everyone in your household act quickly and confidently in the event of a fire. Here’s how to create an effective fire escape plan for your family. This can also help with any other natural disaster as well.

Step 1: Identify all exits

Walk through your home and locate all potential exits. This includes:

  • Doors: Front, back, and side doors.
  • Windows: Make sure windows can be opened easily and are not obstructed by furniture or security bars.

Pro Tip: If your home has upper floors, consider investing in escape ladders for windows. These can easily be rolled up and stored under a nearby couch or somewhere close to the window.

Step 2: Create a floor plan

Draw a simple map of your home, marking all exits and fire escape routes. Include bedrooms, hallways, and staircases to give everyone a clear understanding of the layout. Knowing what is above you is important to know in case of a fire on a different level than you.

  • Mark at least two escape routes from each room.
  • Highlight areas where fire extinguishers are located. If you do not have any fire extinguishers, make sure to get a few for your home. Ideal locations for them would be the laundry room, kitchen, and garage.

Step 3: Designate a meeting spot

Choose a safe, easily recognisable meeting spot outside your home where everyone can gather after escaping. This could be:

  • A neighbour’s driveway
  • A specific tree in the front yard
  • A mailbox or streetlight

Ensure the meeting spot is far enough away to avoid exposure to smoke or flames.

Step 4: Practise your plan

Regular practice is key to ensuring everyone knows what to do. Here’s how to run effective fire drills:

  • Test the plan twice a year: Run drills during the day and at night for added realism.
  • Time your escape: Aim to get everyone out of the house and to the meeting spot in under two minutes.
  • Teach children how to crawl low under smoke and feel doors for heat before opening them.

Step 5: Teach fire safety basics

Make sure everyone understands basic fire safety rules:

  • Never go back inside a burning building.
  • If clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll.
  • Call 911 from a neighbour’s house or a cell phone once safely outside.

Step 6: Maintain your plan

  • Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed.
  • Keep escape routes clear of clutter or obstacles.
  • Update your plan if your home layout changes or family members move in or out.
