Recent data reveals a significant rise in the number of UK residents adopting vegetarian and vegan lifestyles over recent years. In 2024, a comparison website estimated that 2.5 million Britons, or 4.7% of the adult population, identified as vegans, marking a steady increase from previous years. Additionally, research indicates that over half of the UK population is actively reducing or eliminating meat from their diets.

But early 2025 has seen a surprising surge in interest towards the carnivore diet – a regimen that exclusively permits the consumption of meat, fish, eggs, and certain dairy products, while entirely excluding fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and grains. This diet aims for minimal to zero carbohydrate intake. Google searches for “carnivore diet rules” have escalated by over 5,000%, and searches about the “pros and cons of carnivore diet” have risen by 3,700%, indicating a shifting trend.

Proponents of the carnivore diet argue that ancient human populations primarily subsisted on animal products and that modern high-carbohydrate diets are culpable for the prevalence of chronic diseases. Advocates claim benefits such as weight loss, improved mood, and better blood sugar regulation. Notably, some influencers have gained attention by sharing personal success stories. For instance, Isabella “Bella” Ma, known online as “Steakandbuttergal,” asserts that she experienced significant health improvements and a 30-pound weight loss by adhering to a high-fat carnivore diet. She reports enhancements in skin condition, reduced premenstrual symptoms, and alleviation of brain fog. Similarly, James Ellis, a young man from the UK, claims to have lost 11 pounds by consuming an entire roasted chicken daily, documenting his journey on social media.

Despite these anecdotal endorsements, health professionals express caution regarding the long-term implications of such a restrictive diet. Dr Nisha Parikh, a cardiologist, warns that diets predominantly composed of animal products can lead to elevated LDL cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. She emphasises that while short-term weight loss may occur, the potential for long-term cardiovascular issues is a significant concern. Moreover, the absence of plant-based foods eliminates essential nutrients and dietary fibre, which are vital for digestive health and disease prevention. The lack of fibre can result in constipation and negatively impact gut microbiome balance.

Lily Keeling, a registered nutritionist with Green Chef, offers her perspective: “While the reported benefits of this diet—weight loss, improved mood, and better blood sugar regulation – are appealing, there are currently no controlled studies supporting claims that the carnivore diet can effectively address health issues. Some may experience short-term benefits like weight loss, but the long-term effects of eliminating entire food groups, especially fruits and vegetables, can increase the risk of disease, digestive issues, and other chronic conditions. The carnivore diet drastically reduces carbohydrate intake but can lead to nutrient deficiencies, particularly in essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin C and potassium found in plant-based foods. I would always recommend incorporating balanced, low-carb meals that include all food groups, instead of following a carnivore diet.”

The diet’s restrictive nature also raises concerns about sustainability and adherence. Completely eliminating entire food groups can lead to monotony and potential social isolation during meals, making long-term commitment challenging. Additionally, the environmental impact of increased meat consumption cannot be overlooked, as livestock farming significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation.

In conclusion, while the carnivore diet has garnered attention and a following due to anecdotal reports of health benefits, nutritionists and health experts advise caution. The potential risks associated with such a restrictive and unbalanced diet may outweigh the purported benefits. Individuals considering this dietary approach should consult healthcare professionals to ensure it aligns with their health needs and to explore more balanced nutritional strategies.
