Spring has arrived with a sneeze and a scratch for many in the UK, as the Met Office issues “very high” hay fever warnings amid a surge in tree pollen triggered by warmer-than-average weather. Allergy sufferers are already feeling the sting, not just in their noses but on their skin, with itchy eyes, dryness, and flare-ups plaguing sensitive complexions. Cult Beauty, a leading online beauty retailer, has reported a staggering 350% spike in searches for “hay fever tips” over the past week, a clear sign that people are desperate for relief.
To tackle this pollen onslaught, Cult Beauty has partnered with Dr Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy to share expert advice on allergy-proofing skincare routines. The focus is on protecting the skin barrier, a vital defence that pollen can weaken, leaving it prone to irritation and inflammation. “Pollen exposure can compromise the skin’s natural barrier, leading to increased sensitivity, dryness, and discomfort,” Dr Lee explains. When this happens, allergens slip through more easily, setting off a chain reaction of redness and soreness.
Hydration is the first line of defence. Dr Lee recommends hyaluronic acid, a moisture-retaining powerhouse that keeps skin plump and resilient. “Opt for a hydrating serum applied before your moisturiser,” she advises. Ceramides are another essential, working to rebuild the skin’s barrier and lock in hydration. A ceramide-rich moisturiser can make all the difference during high pollen season. She warns against harsh exfoliants, like physical scrubs or strong acids, which can strip the skin further and heighten sensitivity.
Antioxidants also play a starring role in this skincare strategy. Pollen and pollutants can spark oxidative stress, leading to redness and premature ageing. “Vitamin C is key,” Dr Lee says. “It not only helps boost collagen production but also neutralises free radicals caused by allergen exposure.” A stabilised vitamin C serum in the morning can calm irritation and fortify the skin. Niacinamide, another antioxidant gem, reduces redness and soothes pollen-induced flare-ups. For an inside-out approach, Dr Lee suggests eating antioxidant-rich foods like berries, leafy greens, and citrus fruits to bolster skin resilience.
Cleansing needs a gentle touch when pollen is in the air. Particles settle on the skin throughout the day, clogging pores and triggering breakouts or irritation. “Use micellar water to remove makeup and surface allergens without irritating sensitive skin,” Dr Lee recommends. A fragrance-free, hypoallergenic cleanser is ideal for maintaining moisture balance, and she advises washing twice daily, once in the morning and again at night, using lukewarm water to avoid dehydration.
Sun protection is non-negotiable, especially as pollen can make skin more reactive to UV rays. “Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, even on cloudy days, to protect against UV damage and further irritation,” Dr Lee stresses. For sensitive skin, mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are gentler options. Reapplying every two hours outdoors, paired with sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, offers extra shielding from both sun and pollen.
Founded in 2008 by two beauty enthusiasts frustrated with the market, Cult Beauty has grown into a go-to hub for innovative products. Its commitment to transparency, from full ingredient lists to unfiltered customer reviews, set it apart long before such practices became mainstream. Three years ago, the brand launched Cult Conscious with Provenance, spotlighting products with proven social and environmental credentials. Now under THG Beauty, Cult Beauty continues to evolve, leveraging THG Ingenuity’s commerce platform to enhance user experience.
As pollen levels climb, this collaboration with Dr Lee offers timely relief for those battling hay fever’s less-talked-about effects. With the right skincare swaps, allergy sufferers can face spring with a little less itch and a lot more confidence.
