When it comes to designing children’s bedrooms, striking a balance between playful decor and a calming sleep environment can be a challenge. Bright colour schemes and clutter, often characteristic of young children’s rooms, are not typically conducive to a restful atmosphere.

But by making a few strategic adjustments, parents can significantly improve their children’s sleeping habits. Jonathan Warren, bed specialist and director at Time4Sleep, shares valuable tips for crafting a sleep environment that is ideal for kids.

Maximise space with storage-savvy beds

A key strategy for enhancing a child’s bedroom is utilising beds with built-in storage. These beds provide the dual benefit of organising a typically chaotic space without encroaching on the available area. “Cabin beds are particularly beneficial for children’s sleep,” explains Warren. “They offer a cosy and enclosed sleeping space, which is comforting for children who prefer a snug, sheltered environment.”

Embrace minimalism with a touch of character

Adopting a minimalist style in a child’s bedroom can significantly promote better sleep. However, it’s crucial to maintain a sense of personality in the room. Warren advises, “Opt for feature walls with bright colours instead of an all-over colour scheme.” He notes that intense colour schemes can induce feelings of anxiety or stress, which are counterproductive to relaxation. “It’s best to keep vibrant colours out of the bedroom to avoid overstimulation,” he adds. Instead, he suggests lighter, earthy tones or pastels, as well as blue and green hues, known for their calming effects.

Introduce calming elements

Enhancing the bedroom with calming elements can make a substantial difference. “Incorporate soft, warm lighting and furniture that complements the room’s atmosphere,” Warren suggests. For children who are anxious at night, he recommends rearranging furniture to prevent harsh shadows and dark spaces, avoiding intimidating furniture like full-size wardrobes and full-length curtains, and steering clear of mirrors in the bed’s line of sight to keep an overactive imagination at bay.

Address sleep struggles

Dr Hana Patel, a resident sleep expert at Time4Sleep, offers advice for children who struggle with sleep. “It’s important for children to learn to self-settle,” she states. If a child frequently seeks out their parents during the night, Patel recommends leading them back to bed without engaging in conversation, providing a consistent response each time. She suggests the use of a nightlight, cuddly toy, or baby monitor to alleviate anxiety and aid in self-settling.

Routine is important

Dr Patel emphasises the significance of a consistent routine, both at night and in the morning. “Waking up at the same time each morning, even if the child doesn’t wake up naturally, is crucial,” she says. She advises using natural light or music to gently wake children, followed by a structured morning routine, including activities like brushing teeth, getting dressed, and eating breakfast at the same time daily.

By implementing these expert tips, parents can create a bedroom that not only sparks joy and creativity in their children but also fosters a peaceful environment conducive to restful sleep.
