Expert Shares the 4 Best Veggie Alternatives to TikTok’s Bone Broth Craze

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As temperatures continue to drop, the colder weather makes it the ideal time to enjoy broths, stews, and soups to keep warm on those crisp winter evenings.

#bonebroth is a trend that has been seriously brewing this year, with the hashtag gaining 269.8 million views overall on TikTok. Notably, since the beginning of November, the hashtag has seen a surge of 18.1 million additional views as users seek comforting and hearty meals during the colder months.

It was only a matter of time before the trend resurfaced. In November, TikTok user @bakedbymelissa’s video titled “how to make bone broth” has gained over 775.5K views since it was posted.

Similarly, @brookeashleyhall’s video highlights how drinking bone broth daily has helped her feel more energised, racking up an impressive 802.2K views in less than a month.

HelloFresh’s senior recipe development manager, Mimi Morley, comments: “Bone broth is undeniably beneficial, offering a host of nutrients and health benefits. However, it can be quite time-consuming if made the traditional way from scratch and may not always be to everyone’s taste. Using a pressure cooker can be a speedier alternative, too.”

She adds, “Thankfully, there are fantastic alternatives like vegetable, mushroom, and miso broths that can be used as the base for so many cheap and easy meals. So, whether you’re in a hurry or simply seeking variety, there are plenty of satisfying options to keep you warm during the winter.”

Mimi and the team at HelloFresh have revealed four comforting and nutritious alternatives to bone broth to try this winter:

1. Vegetable broth

Opt for a vegetable broth if you lean towards plant-based options. Bursting with colourful vegetables, such as carrots, celery, onions, and herbs, it creates a versatile base for stews, soups, or to simply sip from a mug. Packed with vitamins and minerals, it’s an absolute staple for those colder months.

2. Miso broth

Miso, a traditional Japanese seasoning, creates a divine broth with rich, savoury depths. It’s not just delicious; it’s gut-friendly too, thanks to probiotics. Personalise it with seaweed, tofu, and green onions to create the core of many authentic Japanese recipes, perfect for those chilly evenings.

3. Mushroom broth

For those seeking comforting and umami-rich flavours, mushroom broth is the ultimate solution. Shiitake, oyster, and cremini mushrooms infuse this broth with an earthy aroma and hearty taste, which is not only rich in vitamin D but also adds a comforting and woodland essence to your meals.

4. Herbal broths

Herbal broths, infused with fragrant herbs like thyme, rosemary, sage, and basil, offer soothing and aromatic comfort. Beyond flavour, many herbs may have many valuable properties, especially beneficial during the cold and flu seasons.
