F1 Drivers’ High-Performance Diet Revealed Ahead of Abu Dhabi Finale

As the Formula 1 season reaches its climax at the Yas Marina Circuit this weekend, drivers are preparing for one of the most demanding events of the year. With practice sessions under way and the title fight between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen separated by only 12 points, teams are optimising every competitive advantage, including driver nutrition.

A Grand Prix places extreme strain on the body. Drivers endure G-forces comparable to landing a jet, intense heat inside cockpits that can exceed 50 degrees Celsius, and cognitive loads that require continuous split-second decisions. During a race they may burn roughly 1,500 calories and sweat off up to 4 kilograms of fluid. These conditions underline why nutrition functions as a strategic tool in modern F1.

registered nutritionist Lily Keeling, recipe development manager at Green Chef, has outlined the key components of a typical F1 driver’s diet and how each contributes to performance during a race weekend.

Carbohydrates for energy

“F1 drivers are essentially endurance athletes disguised as sprinters,” says Lily. “They therefore need to consume between 4–7 grams of carbohydrates per kilogram of body mass per day to fuel the brain for precision focus. Carbs such as quinoa, brown rice, or sweet potatoes are perfect for releasing energy slowly and keeping blood sugar stable, essential for a two-hour race.”

She adds: “This approach means prioritising unrefined, high-fibre carbohydrates, ensuring maximum nutrient intake alongside sustained energy.”

These recommendations match established endurance-nutrition guidelines from sports scientists at Leeds Beckett University and in Formula 1 performance reports. For a 70 kilogram driver, intake typically falls between 280 and 490 grams per day. Whole grains help prevent energy crashes, particularly important in Abu Dhabi where the circuit’s 21 corners and high cockpit temperatures amplify mental fatigue.

Protein for recovery and muscle preservation

“Protein is needed for both recovery and preservation,” Lily comments. “With the intense G-forces and core strain, drivers need approximately up to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body mass daily to repair and maintain muscle, especially in the neck and core.”

She notes that drivers choose lean sources such as chicken and fish, while plant-based athletes rely on foods like tofu, tempeh, lentils and quinoa. Lewis Hamilton, who adopted a plant-based diet in 2017, has credited the shift with improving consistency and energy.

Protein intake supports neck-strengthening programmes designed to withstand forces of up to 5G in corners such as Abu Dhabi’s high-speed Turn 9, where lateral loads can equal five times a driver’s body weight.

Nutrients for cognitive precision

Lily explains: “A driver’s reaction time is their secret weapon, and that’s entirely supported by micronutrients and hydration.” Significant fluid loss in hot races increases the need for electrolytes and antioxidants.

She adds: “This means regularly consuming foods like oily fish for Omega-3s, avocados, turmeric, and bright, leafy greens.” Lily concludes: “A diet high in fresh, varied produce is the most effective way to ensure optimal cognitive performance.”

Typical pre-race hydration involves up to three litres of electrolyte-enriched fluids, followed by in-car drinks to offset losses of 2–4 kilograms. Omega-3 sources, including algae supplements for plant-based drivers, support reaction times under 0.2 seconds. Antioxidants help reduce oxidative stress, with supporting evidence from research in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Precision timing through the race weekend

Throughout the Abu Dhabi weekend, drivers follow a structured meal schedule to match training, media commitments, and race simulations. Their routine commonly includes:

  • High-carbohydrate breakfasts before morning sessions
  • Protein-focused lunches to support recovery
  • Snacks rich in micronutrients to maintain focus and hydration
