Most companies have a pyramid structure. It’s where a president or owner is on top, with team leaders flowing down and expanding as the company grows. This structure is old and has been tried and tested. However, it presents certain workplace disadvantages. 

For instance, because communication flows down, those below the hierarchy, particularly employees, will have difficulty sharing ideas, concerns, or feedback with those above. A bureaucratic process could also be prominent in this structure since it involves multiple layers of management. 

Decisions may take longer because they will pass through different levels of approval, causing delays and other similar issues. The risk of micromanagement is also high with this structure, which can be demotivating and counterproductive to employees.

Meanwhile, collective leadership promotes a flat workforce structure, eliminating barriers between management and employees by spreading information evenly. You can achieve such a structure through leadership programs by providing the necessary skills to employees that level with their managers. 

Guiding them toward excellent decision-making, time management, and open communication will reduce bureaucracy and micromanagement because employees can function like their leaders.
