A new study from the University of Ottawa has revealed that cold water therapy, such as ice baths, can significantly enhance cellular health and may support a longer, healthier life. Published in Advanced Biology, the research demonstrates that just seven days of daily cold exposure can improve cell function, reduce inflammation, and increase resilience to stress. As interest in home-based wellness solutions grows across the UK, innovative products like Monk’s smart ice bath are helping more people access this emerging practice.
The study involved ten healthy young men who immersed themselves in water cooled to 14°C for one hour each day over a week. The results showed measurable improvements at the cellular level. A 127 percent increase in LC3-II levels indicated a marked rise in autophagy, the process by which the body recycles damaged cell components. A 60 percent decrease in cleaved caspase-3 levels suggested a reduction in unnecessary cell death, enabling cells to strengthen and adapt. Additionally, a 26 percent drop in TNF-alpha levels pointed to lower inflammation and reduced cellular stress.
Kelli King, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa’s Human and Environmental Physiology Research Laboratory, led the study with Professor Glen Kenny. Their findings highlight the potential of cold exposure to protect cells from stress and slow age-related cellular decline, offering promising insights for preventing diseases linked to cell damage.
The practice is rapidly gaining popularity in the UK. Google searches for “ice bath” and “ice bath near me” have surged by 480 percent in 2025. Cold plunges, once associated with elite athletes and celebrities, are now being incorporated into everyday routines. Home solutions such as Monk’s smart ice bath are making cold water therapy more accessible to the general public.
Laura Fullerton, founder of Monk, said: “Whether it’s for post-workout recovery, boosting mood, or just starting the day with a rush, the at-home cold plunge is fast becoming the new meditation. Studies like this one prove the impact cold water therapy benefits has on overall health, strength, recovery and longevity.
“We live in a world full of chronic stress and environmental toxins, and as a society we don’t focus nearly enough on recovery. If you can give your body the tools to clean up its internal systems, protect its cells, and build resilience with something as simple as cold water, why wouldn’t you?
“Monk was founded with the purpose of helping people make cold water therapy simple, safe and smart, and our smart ice baths and accompanying app are a powerful wellness tool, designed to reboot your body from the inside out.”
Monk’s smart ice bath features variable temperature controls, a digital interface, self-cleaning ozone filtration, and does not require plumbing. Its compact build allows it to fit through standard doors, making it suitable for homes with limited space, including bathrooms, balconies, and gardens. The companion app provides guided breathwork and advanced user functionality to support safe and consistent use.
Beyond the cellular level, cold water therapy has been associated with improved immune function, hormonal balance, reduced muscle soreness, and enhanced mental well-being. Experts advise individuals with medical conditions to consult a healthcare provider before beginning cold exposure routines.
