New analysis from YuLife, an all-in-one insurance and wellbeing employee benefit provider, reveals that chronic illness has overtaken unemployment as the leading cause of economic inactivity across every UK region. The findings, based on the ONS Household Annual Population Survey data for 2024, highlight a growing health crisis impacting the workforce. More than four in ten people in workless households are not seeking jobs due to long-term sickness or disability, with some regions reporting over 50%.

Regional disparities in health-driven worklessness

Northern Ireland faces the highest rates, with 50.6 percent of people in workless households citing long-term sickness as their reason for not working. Scotland and Wales follow closely, both exceeding 43 percent, while North West England reports 43%, compared to just 10% unemployed. By contrast, unemployment accounts for only 5.9% in Northern Ireland and 6.5% in Wales, underscoring health as the dominant barrier to employment. Other regions, such as the South East (33.3%) and East of England (32.8%), show lower but still significant rates of sickness-related inactivity.

A national health crisis affecting productivity

The ONS data reveals stark regional differences, with health now the primary reason for economic inactivity nationwide. Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, North West, and North East England are the hardest hit, while the South West (33.7% and South East show relatively lower figures. This trend reflects a broader challenge: 2.5 million working-age adults are on long-term sick leave, exacerbated by post-Covid health declines and NHS waiting times. Mental health conditions, responsible for 44 percent of long-term absences, further strain workforce participation.

Insights from YuLife’s leadership

Sammy Rubin, CEO and Founder of YuLife, said: “We know that prevention works, but it has to start early, long before someone ends up on long-term sick leave. By turning everyday wellbeing into something visible, trackable, and rewarding, we help people take small steps that add up to major health outcomes. And for employers, that’s not just good for people, it’s good for business too.” This proactive approach aligns with growing evidence that healthier employees reduce absenteeism and boost productivity.

A call for broader action

The rise in health-related economic inactivity, projected to increase by 30 percent by the decade’s end, demands urgent attention. Employers adopting preventative strategies can mitigate the impact on their workforce and the economy. YuLife’s model demonstrates how integrating wellbeing into employee benefits can yield tangible benefits, from fewer sick days to higher retention. As the UK grapples with this silent crisis, innovative solutions like these are critical to fostering a healthier, more productive workforce.
