New research has revealed significant intimacy and communication challenges affecting relationships across the UK. According to the study, nearly 1 in 5 people in the UK (18%) are unsatisfied with their sex lives, and around 1 in 7 (14%) do not feel comfortable communicating their sexual needs and desires to their partner.
As a result, Superdrug Online Doctor, who conducted the study, has created an “Intimacy Ally” tool, an interactive companion designed to help couples and singles address intimacy issues and enhance emotional and physical satisfaction in their relationships.
The survey revealed that 18% of the UK are unsatisfied with their sex lives, with men (23%) reporting higher dissatisfaction compared to women (14%). Meanwhile, 27% of those asked rate their partner’s sexual performance as very poor, poor, or average, and 32% say their sexual needs are often unmet. Despite this disappointment in the bedroom, more than 1 in 5 (23%) never give feedback about their sexual experiences, leading to a cycle of unmet needs and unaddressed issues.
Almost a third (30%) of respondents report feeling pressured to meet certain sexual standards or expectations, with this pressure coming from social media, peers, or cultural norms. The findings also reveal that 32% of respondents believe that emotional connection is the most important factor in sexual satisfaction, ranking above physical attraction and mutual understanding of needs. However, external pressures, stress, fatigue, and body image concerns continue to hinder intimacy for many.
To address these sexual and non-sexual intimacy concerns, Superdrug Online Doctor worked with relationship and sex experts to develop the Intimacy Ally – a new interactive resource that encourages open conversations and deeper emotional connections. It guides users through a series of questions tailored to their needs, providing a personalised score along with feedback and actionable steps to enhance intimacy and relationship satisfaction.
By using the Intimacy Ally tool, individuals and couples can break free from these barriers and create more meaningful connections. The tool not only promotes honest conversations but also offers practical tips for enhancing intimacy, such as taking time to reconnect emotionally, planning meaningful experiences, and finding new ways to communicate needs and desires.
