The most popular response when Brits are asked about the best moment in their lives so far is the birth of their children (24%) closely followed by getting married (17%), meeting their partners (11%), travelling (10%), and seeing their football or other sports team lift a trophy (9%).
That is according to a national survey of 2,000 people, run by Lucela’s, the British-owned and founded producers of the world’s best chocolate rum.
Other top answers from the list included:
- Welcoming their grandchildren (7%)
- Graduating/completing training (7%)
- Securing a good job (5%)
- Individual sports or health achievements (4%)
- Loved ones recovering from illness (3%)
The co-founders of Lucela’s, Phil Fairclough and Andrew Green, were inspired to ask the question after their Chocolate and Rum Spirit Drink was named the World’s Best Chocolate Liqueur at the World Drinks Awards.
“After spending so many years in our kitchens creating the Chocolate Rum and then finally launching it commercially during the COVID-19 lockdowns, getting that recognition from the World Drinks Awards was arguably the best moment in our lives so far,” explains Phil.
“It has been fascinating to hear the range of different responses, and heart-warming to see how many of them are about love, family and community, as well as individual achievements and experiences that clearly had a lasting impact on that person.”
Comments from survey participants included:

Since 2017, Phil and Andrew have been making and perfecting their own unique take on rum. During the Covid lockdowns, they decided to make it commercially as they struggled to find a rum that had the balance of strength, smoothness, and sweetness that they were looking for.
They wanted to respond to consumer demand for hand blended rums that are more drinkable, small batch and luxurious with providence.
“We were overwhelmed with the response. The rich, warming rum and silkiness of the chocolate worked together in harmony. It was our secret drink that we shared with friends and family. We quickly couldn’t keep up with demand from them so we decided to share it with everybody,” says Andrew.
Since the first bottle was sold in 2022, Lucela’s, which is located just outside Blackpool, has introduced several new products to the range, including an indulgent gift set containing the Lucela’s Chocolate and Rum Spirit Drink and milk chocolate shot cups handmade by a third generation local chocolatier. They also make a very grown-up chocolate rum and raisins chocolate bar
The Chocolate and Rum Spirit Drink is available in several sizes, from 50ml to a litre. RRP for a 700-ml bottle is £30.
