Over half of Brits plan to holiday in the UK this year, with staycations emerging as one of the biggest travel trends of 2025. Inspired by the popularity of television shows such as The Traitors and The Rivals, many are opting for countryside getaways, embracing rural charm over international trips.
Fashion retailer Joules has partnered with wellness experts Dr Sham Singh and Amanda Strowbridge to highlight the mental and physical benefits of countryside escapes. They stress that spending time in nature can lower stress levels, enhance well-being, and foster stronger social connections.
To help travellers prepare for a countryside retreat, Joules has also curated a staycation staples guide, offering expert recommendations on what to pack for a stylish and practical weekend in the country.
Dressing for the countryside
According to Joules’ fashion specialists, layering is key when preparing for a rural getaway. Ruffle blouses, sweater vests, and wellies are identified as essential pieces for achieving the quintessential country manor look.
“When heading to the countryside, practicality should be the priority. The weather is unpredictable, so it’s important to pack accordingly,” says a Joules clothing expert. “Choose items that can be layered and styled in different ways. A waterproof parka, a lightweight raincoat, and thermal base layers are great additions to any countryside wardrobe.”
For outdoor walks, fleeces and chunky knitwear provide both warmth and style. “A fleece in a bold shade allows you to tap into colour-blocking trends, while patterned knitwear adds personality to your look,” the expert adds.
Wellies remain a staple for countryside getaways, with TikTok’s “country chic outfits” hashtag amassing over 54.1 million views. “Classic knee-high wellies are a reliable option, but shorter ankle-length versions offer a more modern take. For casual outings, canvas pumps or white trainers provide comfort without compromising on style.”
Accessories also play a vital role in countryside fashion. “Opt for tartan scarves, wool beanies, and silk neckerchiefs to elevate your look,” the expert advises. “Statement accessories can effortlessly transition an outfit from day to night.”
For evening wear, rich fabrics and deep tones create a sophisticated look. “A midi or maxi dress in floral or gingham print works well, while blouses with ruffle details add elegance. Choosing materials like chiffon, velvet, or satin helps bring a sense of luxury to evening outfits.”
The mental and physical benefits of countryside escapes
Wellness expert Amanda Strowbridge emphasises the psychological benefits of taking a break from urban life. “Spending time in nature has significant positive effects on mental health. It allows for relaxation, boosts self-esteem, and fosters a sense of control over one’s life. These factors contribute to a stronger sense of well-being.”
Dr Sham Singh highlights the role of gratitude in improving mental resilience. “Gathering with friends in a natural setting fosters emotional well-being. Gratitude strengthens social bonds and can help alleviate feelings of loneliness by reinforcing connections through shared experiences.”
Time spent outdoors also encourages mindfulness, says Dr Singh. “Being in nature slows us down, reduces distractions, and promotes relaxation. These moments of tranquillity enhance clarity of thought, emotional stability, and resilience.”
Strowbridge adds that outdoor exposure has direct physiological benefits. “Spending time in the fresh air lowers cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Natural light and fresh air also support healthy circadian rhythms, improving sleep and overall relaxation.”
Reinforcing social connections
Quality time with friends in the countryside strengthens relationships, according to Dr Singh. “Shared activities such as cooking together or exploring nature trails create meaningful conversations and reinforce a sense of belonging. These experiences help cement social ties in a relaxed and supportive environment.”
Strowbridge agrees, highlighting the emotional value of a countryside retreat. “Stepping away from daily pressures allows for more authentic conversations and deeper connections. Without external distractions, people feel more at ease and open, fostering trust and emotional security.”
Whether for relaxation, social bonding, or fashion inspiration, countryside staycations are proving to be more than just a travel trend—they offer a rejuvenating escape with lasting benefits for the mind and body.
