Braincoach App Launches in Luxembourg to Empower Early Dementia Prevention

The newly launched Braincoach app, developed under the Programme for Dementia Prevention (pdp), promises Luxembourg residents a proactive approach to mental health. Aiming to reduce dementia risks, this free app is now available on Google Play and the Apple App Store in English, French, and German, offering personalised lifestyle advice and cognitive exercises tailored to users’ unique health profiles.

As dementia concerns grow worldwide, with nearly 8,000 affected individuals in Luxembourg alone, early preventive measures have become crucial. The pdp programme, operational since 2018, has already supported over 600 individuals with mild cognitive impairments through personalised recommendations, from diet and exercise plans to cognitive training and mental health counselling. According to Professor Rejko Krüger, pdp’s coordinator: “There are key risk factors for cognitive decline that can be actively and efficiently targeted through specific early lifestyle changes. We want to inform the Luxembourgish population on this important topic and empower people to act early on to keep their brains healthy.”

This new app leverages insights from “Mijn Breincoach”, a similar initiative in the Netherlands by Maastricht University and the Dutch Ministry of Health. It encourages individuals, particularly those in their 40s and 50s, to adopt lifestyle changes that may reduce dementia risks. The Braincoach app integrates a lifestyle questionnaire that guides users to relevant content, covering 12 modifiable risk factors such as smoking, diet, and physical activity. The app’s interactive format provides tips, quizzes, and challenges designed to foster consistent, brain-friendly habits.

The Braincoach app not only educates users on reducing dementia risks by up to 45% but also connects them with local initiatives. The app’s resources include guidance on adopting a Mediterranean diet, managing cardiovascular health, and boosting physical activity levels. As Professor Krüger highlights, “With a blend of valuable information and recommendations, we hope to motivate more people – whether at-risk or healthy adults—to adopt good habits early on.”

Luxembourg’s Minister of Health and Social Security, Martine Deprez, expressed optimism about the app’s potential to engage younger generations. “We want to build a healthier future for our ageing population. Hence, dementia prevention is a healthcare priority for Luxembourg. Thanks to this new app, we will gain even more visibility for our ongoing efforts in that regard,” she said. “It will help us reach a younger audience who should be made aware of the risks now and given the right tools to take charge of their health early on.”
